Imagine...actually being able to understand your credit card’s policies

A group of good-design advocates in the U.S. have done just that, coming up with a proposed “Credit Card Facts” box that shows, clearly, the rates, fees, etc. for a credit card. We think this is fantastic, and only wish it would become reality. As it is, we’re stuck with all those paragraphs of tiny tiny print which, even if they were readable, wouldn’t mean much to those of us without a law degree. Existing credit card ‘disclosure’ statements are a classic example of consumer-protection requirements being adhered to in letter, but not spirit. Surely disclosure rules were meant to achieve customers actually understanding what we’re getting/paying for? Wish this design would become reality – and then we could address all those Terms & Conditions for software and websites... The full story from The New York Times is here. I have a related tale. A friend of mine, who drafts terms and conditions for finance companies amongst other things, recently applied for a credit card - some fancy platinum thingy. He suffered the indignity of being rejected with a letter he had drafted! What goes around come around.
