Tiger Airways Takes 7 Months to Refund a Cancelled Flight! (Is this a record?)
Is this an Aussie record? Low budget Tiger Airways has reportedly taken an astounding 7 months to refund an Alexandria, NSW passenger for a Melbourne-Sydney flight the airline cancelled.
By the airline's own admission, the passenger filled in all the correct paperwork, within time. The airline blames "computer glitches", but still had to be taken to the NSW Department of Fair Trading and have suit filed against it before finally acting. For how much? The whopping $610 the passenger had to fork out for travelling with another airline following his Tiger flight's cancellation. Extraordinarily, the airline's spokesman has used the occasion to brag of having provided service to the passenger beyond what the airline was required to offer under its terms and conditions - a terrifying insight into the divide between how the airline thinks it's faring in its treatment of its customers, and actual reality as that concept is commonly understood according to accepted standards of space and time.
Tiger Airways has, notoriously, and by its own admission, been plagued with customer complaints since its inception. Welcome news, then, that, according to the news article on this incident, the Federal Government will be exercising closer oversight of the domestic Australian air industry in coming months.
Like our site user 'Ten 4', who's recently waged war against Apple over its providing him with what he says are faulty iphones, this passenger must be congratulated for his moxie in taking on Tiger for such a protracted period.
Still, you have to wonder how many other passengers in similar situations have simply given up in the face of what look like deliberate hurdles placed in the path to fair restitution.
So, what's your experience been with getting refunds from local airlines for cancelled or delayed flights? Let us know with a story or business rating. We'll keep examining this one and report further on what we get from our users.
Meantime, shame Tiger shame!

Up to 7 weeks for a refund
Up to 7 weeks for a refund from Tiger! They certainly didnt take that long to steal the money from me in the first place....I say steal as it was pretty obvious the flight I booked on over the internet didnt exist. Bait and switch is illegal in the car trade - why not the airline industry????
TIGER AIRWAYS - NEVER AGAIN!!!!!
I too had to wait excessively
I too had to wait excessively after Tiger cancelled a service that I had paid bookings for myself and my wife. After faxes, phone calls and emails and a nudge from Consumer Affairs we finally received our refund after 9 weeks.
I know of another person who, in similar circumstances, had to wait 21 weeks before receiving a refund.
In my view this is criminal.

Melbourne to Mackay flight - 1 February 2010
This flight was turned back due to engine problems and I completed a disruption refund form. After sending the original form, faxing details again and 3 phone calls - I am promised yet again that it will be processed urgently. Not Happy Jan - will never fly with them again.
Hi,My Tiger flight from
Hi,
My Tiger flight from Sydney to Melbourne also got cancelled with one day's notice on 31/10/2009, at this time i was told i could change to a flight on a later day or get a refund - I asked for a refund and had to book a last minute flight with another airline instead. I still have not received the refund for my tiger flights! i have emailed and phoned them numerous times and always get the response that it has been escalated to head office and i should have the payment within a few weeks... but of course, i never receive it! i sent a written complaint about 2 months ago and have still not received a reply! i will never use Tiger airways again.
I was meant to go to
I was meant to go to goldcoast for the weekend booked tiger to leave friday nigtht come home sunday morning had 2 nights booked at a hotel, Tiger ended up canceling the flight after delaying it friday night , stranded at avalon airport 10pm with no way getting home paid $150 for a taxi then $150 back, to stay at a friends then they couldnt offer another flight till sat night so there was no point going so lost my flight on the way home as well. 9 weeks later 4 phones calls they refuse to pay back anything because one of the people I was traveling with not me, was in agument with the desk about a new flight. These people are criminals and no one should ever fly with the DOGS . F&#&$* Them they need to be out of this country
My dad's flight was cancelled
My dad's flight was cancelled at last minute from Melbourne to Adelaide. He and his two companions (all in their late 70s) had no other means of returning home. In the end they hired a car and DROVE home all night! Scheduled flight was in August, sent refund form on 6/9/10 and STILL waiting for refund in Jan 2011. Can't get through on phone, no response to faxes. This is only one of several problems we have had with Tiger, NEVER again.
@Jono, @AnnaMcKenzie - thanks
@Jono, @AnnaMcKenzie - thanks to you both very much for relaying yours / your family's own horror stories with Tiger.
We're continuing to compile this kind of research (first and second hand from real customers) and are planning a follow - up story and a referral of our findings to a couple of relevant authorities. Look out for more postings here on our Blog on the subject of Tiger.
In the meantime, also encourage anyone else you know who's had an experience with Tiger's refund / cancellation policies to share their stories in the comments section here or in a review of Tiger.
Regards and again, our great thanks (and Happy Australia Day!)

Oh and ... I finally did get
Oh and ... I finally did get through to Tiger last night. I was asked what I wanted, I answered that I need to enquire about a refund for a cancelled flight. I was asked for the flight number. Once I had quoted the flight number I realised that no-one was on the line anymore. They had hung up. I have now been in touch with Office of Consumer Affairs in SA who told me they have hundreds of complaints about Tiger. I will be filling the form requesting their assistance to recover the money, seems from what I've read, once they get a call from someone like OCA, the refund comes pretty quick. I encourage everyone to do this and, no matter how cheap the flights seem, DON'T fly Tiger.

Thanks for your input.
You should contact office of Fair Trading in your State / Territory. Indications are, when Tiger is contacted by an authority, they move faster with their refunds.

Hi Natasha
You should definitely contact your Office of Fair Trading. I have still not had the refund, but I've had correspondence from the OFT to say that the payment will be made this month. Nine months is absolutely abhorrent.
Wake up folks You cant expect
Wake up folks
You cant expect champagne treatment on a beer budget. The Tiger CEO said this the other month.
Been waiting for my refund
Been waiting for my refund for four months now for a flight that got cancelled in December 2010, but doesn't seem like I'll get it back anytime soon by the looks of the comments above. Asholes. Never flying with them again!
I have been waiting for 9
I have been waiting for 9 weeks now for my $320 refurnd, which doesn't seem like much compared with some above however I still consider it very dicey business practise. After reading a few comments prior to this it seems that the other efficient course of action is to dispute the credit card payment with your bank. As this pressure much like that of Fair Trade prompts Tiger into immediate repayment. I am about to launch into a investigation on both fronts to try and uncover the fastest route to reimbursement. I'll keep you posted.

Congrats Anna - and good on
Congrats Anna - and good on you for pursuing them and standing up for your consumer rights!
It's not about 'champagne'
It's not about 'champagne' service, it's about lack of ANY service. If they cancel a flight on the day and hand out refund forms, they should then refund your money immediately. Why should anyone wait 9 months for a refund that is 100% warranted? Why will they not return any calls, emails or faxes? I would imagine lots of people give up without ever receiving their money. The CEO of Tiger should be looking at their refund policy, instead of making rubbish public statements.
I totally agree with Anna
I totally agree with Anna McKenzie's last comments. And again, congrats on having the wherewithal to take the airline on and get your refund.
It's a shame I just read
It's a shame I just read these complaints only after I made the booking with Tiger.
I flew from Bris to Melb
I flew from Bris to Melb last month with them and flight was on time and fine.
I have booked a return ticket to Brisbane for the middle of May.
After seeing the news today, I dont think i will get lucky a second time.
Might have to book another flight with Virgin or Jetstar in case.
The return flight only cost me $125 so its not the end of the world, but time will tell in next few weeks

It has been 18 months and I am still waiting for my refund, we forked out an extra 800 odd dollars for tickets with another carrier due to a cancelled flight!!
I have had enough!!
I am still fighting for my
I am still fighting for my money they charged me incorrectly in Jan/2011 MELB - Cairns . I am taking them to VCAT for it.
Do you like horror
Do you like horror stories?
Boy, do I have one for you!
On 18th May, flight TT 6273 departing from Perth at 7.45pm and heading to Melbourne was cancelled with no prior warning. So they put us on the next available flight,at 9.50 am, but that too was delayed...My friend and myself spent a very cold uncomfortable night at Perth airport.Of course, customer care isn't covered by Tiger's policy.
Our return flight on 25th May, TT 6272 departing from Avalon at 5.10pm,was cancelled with no prior warning. This time Tiger was more gracious...by providing a $5 meal voucher and a chartered bus to Tullamarine for a 10.45pm flight to Perth. Not everyone from our previous flight was fortunate enough to get a place on this flight.
Now I understand that Tiger Airways is a "bargain bucket" and as I've flown with budget airlines, delays are common but what we experienced...and you can't even call them to complain, they put down the phone on you.You gotta email them or use...post.
DO NOT FLY TIGER !
Please share this with everyone,so no one has to go through what we went through.
i just got a refund yesterday

hey,
did you end up getting a head office address or just a po box address because i am trying to contact them as i am getting papers served to them trying to get my money back.
thanks,
lorraine.
Hi Lorraine, you should
Hi Lorraine, you should immediately contact your Office of Fair Trading and Consumer Affairs and ask them to send you a complaint form. Once you have filled this out, send it back to them with as much information as you can, like your boarding pass, copies of any correspondence you have sent to Tiger and details of times you have tried to contact them. They will contact Tiger for you and arrange the refund, you won't have to do anything else. The OFT in my state were fantastic, they followed up with me until I had received my refund, which was 6 weeks after contacting them. I had been trying for six months before that to contact Tiger. Good luck!

We are tourists and already back to our homeland, what should we do ?
Pls help us!
TT6207 form Sydney to Avalon was cancelled on April 27,and my family of 3 people were moved to TT5113 on April 28. Because Tiger Airways promise to reimburse hotel costs up to $120 per passengers per night ,we asked for the hotel imbursement on May 3 by sending fax to +61 03 93353455,but get no response after 27 days.

OMG are you kidding me? I
OMG are you kidding me? I wish I had known all this before I booked! They have just changed our flight for a departure 5 hours after what we originally booked for. Can now get my flight for almost the same price, at the right departure time with Virgin Blue. Who we normally fly with all the time! Tiger aint answering their phones, I've been on hold for 50 mins now. Not happy! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
In brief, I booked a flight
In brief, I booked a flight with Tiger, and online was denied the online check in facility, and at the airport charged a further $30 because it was deemed my fault for faiilng to check in in accordance with their terms. As it happens, if you look carefully enough, you will find via a series of hyperlinks at the time of booking that it is a term that check-in be made at least four hours prior to departure. But you have to look and know what you are looking for. In addition the check in attendant was extremely rude and basically penalised me for objecting to the fee by weighing my bags and requiring me to pay even more because I was 2kg overweight (instead I removed a heavy jacket and tied it around my waist). Terrible attitude and deceptive conduct.
what address did you use to
what address did you use to get your refund as they wont respond to the po box
I booked return flights from
I booked return flights from Melbourne to Gold Coast last Easter (as in 2010). Return flight was cancelled with 1 hour's notice. Was told they would reimburse me the accommodation and I forwarded all the requested paperwork and receipts within one week of returning to Melbourne. Sent 2 letters and about 12 phonecalls but still nothing done. Close to 16 months now and I am still out-of-pocket. Companies like this shouldn't be allowed to be in business.
Worst airlines by far. Avoid
Worst airlines by far. Avoid at all costs. Known for last minute delays and cancellation. Was banned in Australia because they didn't adhere to safety regulations. My luggage was tampered with and things were stolen. Went to file report and attendant automatically asked if it was a Tiger Airlines flight, which only goes to show how often it happens. Airlines company impossible to reach directly because they can only be reached by email. Bad experience. Will never fly with Tiger airlines again.
Thanks to Consumer Affairs
Thanks to Consumer Affairs Victoria,I finally got a cheque for the hotel reimbursement from tiger, but I'm still not sure if I can get cash for it , it takes 2 months to cash a foreign cheque here in China

I flew with tiger on march 4,
You should contact the Office
You should contact the Office of Fair Trading (Consumer Affairs) in your State immediately. Once you have sent them your case, you should get your refund back fairly quickly. I received mine within 6 weeks after getting nowhere with Tiger for 6 months. Good luck : )
