This week, we’re bringing you some Customer Underground maven foodie tips in South Sydney – from Redfern down through Mascot, here are some favourite spots and a couple of hidden gems.  We’ll bring you some tips soon on even further South in Sydney – so review the best spots in the Shire and elsewhere down South to get yours on the map.

  1. Bitton Gourmet Cafe: In Alexandria/Erskineville, this cafe/restaurant/grocery is the number one ranked eatery on Customer Underground!  Mavens love the food, and also rave about the “personal service” (galvinsd says it’s “where everyone knows your name!”) and the playroom that keeps the kids occupied.  Angielouise2001 also gives a special shout-out to the one-pan breakfast – yum.
  2. Saint-Germaine French Patisserie: This “unassuming” Redfern bakery has attracted a following for its pastries (of course), and also gets props for the “chilled out” atmosphere, “cheap and delicious” sandwiches, and “authentic French feel”.  Hitchikersguide’s verdict: “So French, so Redfern!”
  3. First Drop Cafe: And for another breakfast and coffee option, mavens recommend this Redfern cafe with free wifi, and give special mention for “ultra friendly” service; Died On Hold says of the staff, “they all said hello! Shades of Jerry Maguire as I mentally awarded them four stars right off the bat”.  Faeriebek says, “I just love these guys!”
  4. Yens Vietnamese Restaurant: More in the hidden gem category, this spot in Waterloo has been put on the Underground by Ten4, who says he “can’t stop raving about it”.  $8 Pho Tai sounds good to us too.  He does warn about the decor – “It’s like being inside an old Kelvinator. But I reckon that just adds to the charm”.
  5. A&S Quality Meats: Another insider tip is for this Mascot butchery, which rickee tells us offers “high quality meat without the high prices and the marble gilt surrounds”.  He also notes they have more niche items like venison, quail, and rabbit, and a pre-ordering service online – great!
