This Week's Top Five: Mother's Day Gift Ideas

It’s Mother’s Day this Sunday May 8 – that is, tomorrow! – and if you’re anything like the team at Customer Underground, odds are you’re still scrambling for a last minute gift, torn between love, guilt at what your disorganisation might be saying about your level of appreciation for the woman who gave you life/gave your children life and slight resentment at being forced to show your affection commercially on a randomly designated day.

To get our gift-giving done, we’ll be using some tips from our mavens for great mother’s day gifts. Most – except GP Israel – are possible to grab between now and Sunday’s end; and you could head to any next week if you’re on the belated apology gift plan. And if you’re a mum, we fully endorse forwarding this list to the men in your life!

  1. Kikki K’s chain of giftstores are a great source of papiery-focussed Mother’s Day goodies: beautiful stationery, cards, notebooks and organising accoutrements. Marzipan says it’s “a fairyland” for those who dream of being organised, and also notes “The design is top-quality, and the prices do reflect that.”
  2. Venustus Day Spa in Paddington is loved by mavens for the attentiveness and quality of service, and glamorous feel – and what mum wouldn’t love a gift voucher for a massage or facial?  Shopaholic says, “Smells good, sounds good, is good”.
  3. Summers Floral, in Woollahra and Hunters Hill, is hardly your only flower option for Mother’s Day, but this one gets major praise. GimmeMore says that not only do they have “an impressive, beautiful, wide and interesting range of flowers and foliage”, but the “staff are excellent”. In person, over the phone or even online, there are gorgeous arrangements, pots and posies to be had, at a wide range of prices ranging from tolerable to eye-watering, depending, we guess, on how good you feel you’ve been to Mum through the year.
  4. GP Israel Diamond Merchants is worth thinking about if you’re up for splurging on your ma – these diamond wholesalers are the experts, and they’ll give you the really good stuff at great prices, with superb advice. Says Mel K, “GP Israel is the way to go”. Their main focus is the stones, the staff will have great recommendations for where to go to get the setting; they also have a small selection of already-set jewelry and similarly reasonable prices.
  5. If, on the other hand, you’re after a more humble – and practical – expression of love, how about giving her a break from endless meal preparation? If that appeals, our mavens all seem to point in one direction: The Dinner Ladies – home cooked meals, delivered to your door. Why not order a week, or even a month’s worth? Maven, and mum, sass calls them “a deeply religious experience”. They’re one of the best reviewed businesses on all of Customer Underground and our team can personally vouch for the deliciousness of this particular recommendation!

Whichever of those ideas appeal, you’re bound to find something from our mavens’ reviews to appeal to mum/wife this weekend. And all thanks to the great reviews of you, our mavens.  Happy hunting!
