Great margaritas, yummy mexican, nice ambiance!
My husband and I ate here on Saturday; we've been on the search for good Mexican food since leaving San Francisco and living in Austin, Texas in the US.
I'd say that Agave is the best mexican food I've had in Sydney - great strawberry margaritas - not too sweet with just the right amount of Tequila, excellent salsa and pico de gallo - homemade? corn tortillas, well seasoned beef fajitas, great quesadillas, and crispy tasty chicken flautas. An excellent experience all for under $80 for a pretty good sized meal with drinks, starters, and a main.
I'll be back for my next Mexican fix!
The Price is Wrong, Food is Good not Great
I love Mexican food. It's pretty much the best thing that can happen to you. So imagine my excitement as I arrived at one of Sydney's newer 'fresh-traditional' Mexican eateries.
It looks the part, and has a decent vibe, despite an odd clientele which looked like a busload of Eastern Suburb parties had shipped in somewhere they thought was cool. Glasses are thick like thick glass and the Aztec thing is going on most everywhere.
The waitstaff are really quite attentive and are quick to offer guacamole and booze. Important to note the guac I intelligently turned down was $15! That must be some good avocado dip.
The food is split between entree/tapas and main, although both categories resemble something more akin to the degustation menus of more reputable establishments.
Food was good without being great. A cheese dip with chorizo and mushrooms was just melted/baked cheese served with tortillas. Really pretty awesome, although not exactly a feat of culinary precision. Stuffed jalapenos were insipid at best. Chicken flautas were the star attraction - chicken filled tortillas deep fried and served with salsas and guac (not $15 this time - and still not that amazing).
We ate only one main which were three soft, fresh pork burritos with pineapple. These were tasty but at $22 you'd be better off going to Guzman y Gomez or Mad Mex.
Dessert reached similar, non-dizzying heights with Cheesecake and Churros. Both were pretty average really - how can you stuff up donuts and chocolate sauce?
All I can say is that it's a really good thing I had a Scoopon, otherwise I woulda been really peeved.
Next time, take your $45 a head and feast on GyG until you are blind with quality Mexican fare. 'Nuf said.
The ideal Mexican restaurant in Sydney
Food, amazing. Servive, efficient & welcoming. Atmosphere, pleasant.
Overall, a great restaurant however every time I have visited, the place does not seem to be busy with patrons which is surprising.
