Love, love, love Alchemy!
Forget small pretty looking food- Alchemy is where tummy warming happiness can be found! Decked out like a European Nana's house and run by a very lovely husband and wife team, Alchemy is just a great place to dine and relax.
The food is authentic and portions are generous. You can taste the love in the cooking- anyone with Polish, Czech or Russian background or ties will really dig the cooking as its traditional, tasty and huge! It isnt vego friendly, but when was Polish food ever?! You can eat a main and spilt a dessert or entree between two and still be overloaded with yummy goodness.
If you love your traditional drinks with spirits or just want to feel very warm and er... loose in the limbs department, try the Polish tea. It tastes just as beautiful as it smells and really knocks you for six in a good (alcoholic) way. Wine list is good and the selection of Euro beers to match the food are just grand.
What makes Alchemy so delightful is the staff. Everyone is smiling, attentive- talkative and the owner is always working the floor with a cheeky smile and a great laugh to be had. You leave feeling appreciated, well looked after and really noticing just how special the service is.
This is by far my FAVOURITE place in Surry Hills.
A magic mix
Alchemy Polish Cafe is a wonderful little old-fashioned oasis amidst the ever-changing trendiness of Surry Hills - crochet table cloths, traditional Polish food, a short wine list... and reasonable prices with attentive, caring service. It's tiny, with candlelight, and feels warm a welcoming - a great spot for dinner with a small group of friends (quiet enough that you'd be able to - shock! - hear your companions), or a dinner date. We had the Alchemy herring to start - fabulously salty with a creamy oniony salad - and then the Polish dumplings and house-made tiramisu. All were delicious, even the tiramisu which admittedly isn't a particularly Polish dish. I'm a big fan, and will be back for sure.
