Rock Institution for Sydney
Recently voted the worst male toilets in Sydney for live music and feeling a little heavy under the weight of a FOR SALE sign, you could, if you wanted to, dismiss the Annandale and right her off. But don't. Not yet anyway, because this crazy old gal has some life in her yet.
Live music here is a tradition and a treat. If yr a muso, playing the Dale is the sign you have started to get somewhere. For punters, its your time to get sweaty, have a dance, have a drink and not have to listen to some dude in a corner which hairstyles from the rich and famous wikka wikka a CD and call that talent.
The Dale has been bringing Sydney rockers and fans a place to meet, eat and consume beer in copious loads under the brothers Rule and we should support that. They've brought us countless great Aussie acts, have one of the best Christmas Parties in Sydney, give prog music with the Birds Robe and Progfest a fantastic home and have brought us ball achingly great music from the likes of Future of the Left from OS. Why aren't we kissing these two brothers and calling them ice cream?
When yr at the Dale, you can also eat yr fill of tasty pub style thai. Wok n Roll is a great place to drop in and eat at even if you are not there for the music. There are also plans (I think) to reopen the top part and create yet another reason to come to the Dale beyond just the live music.
Sydney, the Dale is a dark, sometimes smelly, messy and unruly part of Sydney life... and we need morelike her! But if we cannot because residents move in and then complain or because everyone's hung up on being on the front cover of "Poser Monthly", lets keep this beaut lil cracked lass alive and sweating with rock and beer eh? We all need a place to let loose, shake bums and get our rock on!
Last bastion of live music in the inner west
No introductions needed for this live music institution. The Annandale has been a shining beacon in the ever-diminishing Sydney live music scene since it was bought by the Rule Brothers more than a decade ago. It may not be the prettiest pub in town, but it sure does have character by the bucketload.
The main live room is (arguably) the best medium sized venue in Sydney for new young guns and established bands alike. Great sound (mostly) and decent sightlines but when it's crowded it can be a bit of a battle to get the bar.
They serve great 'pub-thai' in the beer garden - cheap and delicious. The new bar upstairs, although I haven't visited it yet, sounds like it could be great fun.
The pub has faced an uphill battle for most it's recent life - with tightening council regulations, rising running costs, and inexplicably irate local residents and noise control issues (you moved next door to the Annandale huh? what did you expect??) all contributing to it's current plight.
The 'dale's currently up for sale, so get down there and see a gig or two, or just have a beer and soak in the atmosphere. Otherwise next time you do you may find in it's place an anonymous block of units instead, and the pub in all it's former glory a mere ghost. And what a sad day that would be for Sydney (and Australian) music.
