Loved the decor. The pork belly was outstanding. Now, about the macaroons... until yesterday I'd managed to make it through the world without having a macaroon - no mean feat, considering I'm 44. They were bloody amazing (not on my diet, I might add). I tried the strawberry and the chocolate. There's also salted caramel, blackcurrant, and quite a few other flavours definitely worth a bit of unbridled salivation.
I got chatting to one of the waiters - French, of course. It turns out that the father of the family that owns the business ran a patisserie(s) for many, many years. It was his wish to start a restaurant but he passed away before he realised his dream. So the sons started the business to make good on their father's vision. What a story!
Just one word, "Non!"
I love French food. Especially if it comes with a view of Sydney Harbour and a sunny Sunday afternoon. So I was pleased as punch to find the Baroque Bistro & Patisserie in the Rocks. The bakers were rolling croissants in the window and I could faintly hear the sound of the French language coming from the kitchen. Perfect! Except that it wasn't perfect at all. We waited 15 minutes to be seated, even though the place was 1/2 empty. After sitting down, it took frantic waving to attract the attention of one of the passing waiters to put in our order. We dared to ask some questions about the brunch menu, which were briskly answered (incorrectly it turned out). We ordered and then waited. And waited. Coffees came out cold. Brunch finally came and was just not good. I had ordered a dish that was described as "baked eggs in a ramekin." But it wasn't baked at all, simply really runny eggs with bits of ham floating around. Baguettes were over toasted and over buttered. No forks for 15 minutes. I must admit though, the vinaigrette dressing that was on the small side-salad was *excellent.* We quickly ate and then left... Not quite a "one-star" because of the vinaigrette and the beaut of a view, but not much else to recommend it... I have heard good things about this place from friends, but for myself, I won't be going back.
