A Surry Hills treasure - you must dine here!
I had heard mixed reviews about Bentley since their renovation so was sceptical when I made a reservation for lunch with my parents on my 30th birthday. There was a big party planned for the evening, so we wanted something fairly low key and relaxed for lunch. I first tried the Winery but they were booked out, so I thought we would give Bentley's $55 set lunch menu a shot.
How pleasantly surprised we were! It was a hot day, and the restaurant was crisply air conditioned (always a treat and a great first impression in the middle of summer!). The service was attentive and knowledgeable, the two waiters seemed to work the room effortlessly and everyone was well taken care of. I asked for advice on the champagne choice, and it was articulately delivered and a couple of recommendations were made. The waiter really knew the wine list well – and that impressed me a lot. Dishes were well described when they arrived at the table, cutlery etc was always re-set and wine glasses were topped up or cleared accordingly.
The food was of exceptional standard, presented beautifully, perfect portion size.
If you've not been to Bentley for lunch stop kidding yourself and get down there ASAP. This is a little Surry Hills gem and should not be missed by anyone!
Incredible food
Yes it's very expensive; yes - the decor is nothing speical; yes - the service was not particularly friendly ... but the food was incredible!
I mean this is the sense that the flavours and design of each dish were extremely unique and mind-blowing. For this spoilt Sydney sider who thought they had "tasted every taste", this meal proved me wrong!
A perfect storm of restaurant elements.
There are many great restaurants in Sydney, yet when thinking of my favourite location for a gastronomic experience, Bentley is always top of mind. Everything comes together in a perfect storm of quality – the décor, the staff (many of whom have remained for the 4 years in which I’ve been going) who are always welcoming, the amazing wine list and the food itself which never fails to provide unique textures and flavours. Sure molecular gastronomy may be out of fashion, but Bentley never goes out of style.
Heavenly ricotta dumplings
I had a lovely meal at Bentley - the food and service were both excellent, and the atmosphere is fun and buzzy. Best of all were the two after-dinner sweets that we ordered - ricotta dumplings served on top of rasberry jam, and a sort of high-end chocolate bar - both of which were divine. Our friend, who had been here before, wisely ordered extra orders of both so we wouldn't have to fight over them. She also tipped me off that one can come here for an afternoon drink or coffee and order a plate of dumplings all for oneself - something I plan to do very soon...
