A great culinary experience worth the wait
The first attempt to go to Berta we were informed it was a 3 1/2 wait for a table. Now I'll travel to another country for a good meal, but 200 minutes in Surry Hills is a bit much.
Second attempt we had no trouble, securing comfortable bar positions where we could watch the (unusual) female dominated kitchen do it's thing.
Great service, excellent food and some brilliant wine followed. With an ever changing menu it makes little sense to point out single dishes, but know everything is seasonal and of a very high quality.
Not the cheapest of evenings, but still worth it.
Once you have found it, it was well worth looking!
This restaurant tucked away at the back of Central Station amongst office buildings is tough to find. There is no obvious signage or people loitering about to indicate the restaurants door, but... once found you will be happy you persevered. Owned by Andrew Cibej (owner of Vini, Surry Hills) it is similar in style with a daily changing menu of Italian fare. The wine list is great with some excellent Italian wines at incredibly reasonable prices.
The service was excellent, knowledgeable about both the food and wine, happy to give opinions with some dry wit thrown in.
Then the food! I was thrilled to eat some seafood as don't often eat it home due to an allergic partner. The crab bruschetta was fantastic. We also sampled the pork meatballs, the fennel & pork sausage and a delicious polenta dish. After that my favourite part of the night - excepting my dining companion - the cheese platter. There were three cheeses, a gorgonzola, a young Pecorino and a soft, almost runny cheese of which I can't remember the name. Each was paired with a gel or paste of some sort. The soft cheese with the pear gel was pure heaven. I could happily eat it again and again.
Good value for money made the night every bit worth the trekking about to find the restaurant. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Holy hell this is incredible modern Italian!
This new bar/restaurant does modern Italian and, having eaten here last night, I can say it's incredible.
Service is quick and friendly without being intrusive. Great (if not cheap) cocktails and Italian beers (including rarities like the Sicilian 'Messina'). Great share dishes are the idea here: beetroot and broadbeans, truffled salami, flash fried pig, suckling pig, T-bone steak the likes of which you've almost never experienced before.
And there's incredible gelato and sorbet for dessert: in combos like Buffalo milk and bay leaf, and apple and gin.
It's not cheap (about $125 a head for two or $250 all up) but for a special occasion, you'd be hard pressed to find a better new place in inner Sydney.
