What a brilliant idea for Sydney music!
Prog and post rock started growing lengthy legs in Sydney, yet the venues didn’t know what to do with these two new styles. Stuck with metal, billed as instrumental and told they were often too loud, too experimental and not crowd pleasing, several of Sydney’s bands featuring some of the best musicians around felt like the smelly kid at the fashionable ten year olds upper class birthday party. But instead of head butting the jelly and giving a Chinese burn to the nearest booker before running off to sulk in their rehearsal rooms, a couple of these smelly kids created themselves a distinctive aroma by banding together with their fellow prog and post rock friends and from it, the Birds Robe Collective was born.
By bringing together bands that suited each other onto the same bill, and having representation in the form of the Birds Robe Collective when dealing with venues and bookers, prog and post rock started to gain momentum. No more were the likes of pirate, Cities of the Red Night, meniscus, Panzer Queen, Slimey Things, Anubis and Dumb Saint pushing their wares to bookers without a proper plan and demonstrated numbers- and that folks is incredibly powerful. From helping bands gain gigs in Sydney and introducing them to fellow bands for further gigs, BRC have coordinated East Coast tours, helped with EP and album launches, created a record label and even super groups from hand picking musicians and bringing them together for even more collaboration. Fans of post and prog now trust the Birds Robe Collective to provide them with quality and well matched performances, so much so they have even started getting the attention of other bands as far away as South Africa. Not a shabby achievement for two musicians who just wanted to play!
If you love prog or experimental rock music, keep an eye out for the Bird's Robe name!!
