Great selection of secondhand books, buyback scheme

Booked Out is adjacent to the Randwick Ritz cinema, and it keeps opening hours that make it a nice little place to visit before or sometimes after the movies (or during the kids' one).

It has a wide selection of good-quality secondhand books at reasonable prices that are well displayed so it's reasonably easy to find specific titles or genres.

A bonus is a scheme where you get half your money back if you return a purchased book after reading (but I learned to my slight chagrin that they don't really like you to take the price sticker off the cover in the meantime - finicky about appearance, I'd move the sticker to the inside cover while the book was in my ownership...)

They also buy books, though they're quite selective about what will and won't sell quickly, especially when the shelves are a bit full. They're not overly generous, but you get a bit extra if you take the money as 'credit' to spend on books in Booked Out itself, either then or later (they have a manual card system - I'd hate to come back and find the store closed if I'd built up a bit on my credit ledger... but, hey, it's nice to show some trust in this slightly old-fashioned business...)

THIS PLACE SUCKS AND HERE'S WHY!

This place - a second hand bookstore in the heart of Randwick's The Spot shopping area - is run by one or more older women. They sell lots of children books. But they don't want any of them bought by children or their parents, clearly. My 6 year old was escorted in there today with his mother, and exclaimed, excitedly, that they had Harry Potter books he wanted to get (and which he was looking for). Immediately, one of the women working there screamed at him (note the irony) "No Shouting!". He wasn't. He was an excited, 6 year old boy, speaking at the volume at which overjoyed children speak.  My wife, a very calm, unflappable person, was so shocked at the sheer violence of the outburst, that she took both kids (she also had our 3 year old with her) out immediately, with no plans ever to return, and it's really an experience that hasn't left her since. It's one of the oddest, rudest, most hostile shop experiences she's ever had. So clearly they don't want our business - a genius strategy too. Why would they want the business of a young family - all readers - with small children who will want books to be read to them, and to read for themselves, for at least the next 10 years, and who just moved into the area.  Close up shop, Booked Out owners. There's no fancy way to say it - THIS PLACE SUCKS!
