Call me crazy but I still like to look at a book beyond its cover, first
I know that it's all hip to downgrade the book shop experience to go for the cheaper books online. And I am tempted from time to time, but I also like to be surprised, to go into the shop and find that it wasn't just the book that I was looking for that grabbed me, but the one on the neighbouring shelf and even one in a section I never intended to enter. I still believe in serendipity when it comes to a good read. You too?
Good prices, big selection but still patchy and poor service
I use places like Borders to get the best (often unbeatable local) deals on prominent books. If it's something more off the beaten path (a non-recent book by an author etc.), I know the odds are they won't have it. And the staff are, let's face it, not great: patchy in level of information, often phoning it in (they're famous [musicians/artists/whatevers] don't you know? And ordering there blows: can often take weeks.
So, in all, great deals on readily available staff, including DVDs and music. Otherwise, meh...
