Most amazing fresh gourmet sausage rolls

I stopped off here on a Sunday bike ride for some tasty treats and I couldn't decide what to get! I think that is the best way to describe what's on offer here , indecision, everything smells and looks amazing. There are cakes, pies and sausages rolls right out of the oven from this tiny haven. If you are in the area and feeling peckish it's worth a visit.

Tasty but could do with a new shopfront!

No doubt the food is tasty. And great value - cheapest sandwich takeaway in the area. But go there on a Sat or Sun? No thanks, I don't queue 40 min for bread.

Suggest that having a wider shopfront with more staff & better processes might help aid the traffic congestion.

Delicious coffee and pastries, really good service

We've been coming here for years. One of the best coffees in the inner East, with mochas particularly special... something about their chocolate. Great service on the whole: they remember you, are kind to babies and kids, and often do something special. With good timing you can pretty well avoid the queues. Definitely a favourite.

Played a role in creating many a coffee addict

The constant queue around the block says it all - this gem serves some of the best coffee is Sydney and smell of pastries permeates the whole corner. Friendly staff and local feel makes this spot a pleasure to visit and has played a large role in creating many a coffee addict.

The food is consistent; the service far from it.

The bread from this bakery is superb. The cakes too and biscuits. In fact all the food is worth it. But if the food is consistent the service is far from it. For the most part the staff are more taken up with being cool than with remembering who to serve next or getting your order right. They have also at times been flat out rude. It makes the experience of eating there less than pleasurable. And you worry if your order will every come out. However if you can ignore that then the food is worth it.

I am there twice a week lining up like a junkie for my hit

On every corner in Surry Hills are competing coffee machines; so how do you stand out in a crowd? Bourke street bakery doesn't know. Sitting outside at their tables is considered take-away and my coffee came in a paper cup. I may as well eat the cup. Rude and unpleasant service. My theory is that they put crystal meth in their chocolate and cherry biscuits. It is the only reason I am there twice a week lining up like a junkie for my hit. It is seriously delicious, but to eat in ? never again. If I want grunge feelings and moody and cranky company I'll eat their food at the park acros the road with the two homeless guys.

Not only is the bread here one of the freshest in Sydney, there is so much variety. The bread is made daily, and all those who eat are always impressed. The one thing I would say, however, is that you have to get in early. Otherwise, the bread is gone and you will have missed out!

The perfect start to a hungover morning

Waking up bleary eyed the next morning, I can see the Bourke Street Bakery from my bedroom window and what a glorious sight it is. First thing in the morning, the locals bring their dogs and kids on cute little bikes to this popular spot. After grabbing their morning kick-start coffee, they hang out in the park below my window while the kids and dogs roll on the grass. The Bakery is the perfect start to a hungover Saturday morning. You’re not quite ready to commit to breakfast but a coffee is required, stat.  I stumble over the road, grab the papers then retreat to the safety of my apartment.

Passion in the food, not the service

I've loved the quality and passion that has obviously gone into the baked goods and creating the warm, rustic and slightly bohemian shop atmosphere.    If you can skip the Bourke St location... the lineup, shop crowd and that cliched indifferent "too cool" attitude from staff does not do the food justice.  Although I used to be a fan I admit this has really turned me off.  The location in Mascot offers more space to actually sit and enjoy your food, less crowding and an overall friendlier experience.

delicious bread and cakes

Bourke Street Bakery makes fantastic bread! I love the presentation of their cakes - very fresh, good quality with an emphasis on taste as well as appearance. Ginger brulee tarts and their muffins are my favourite. The only thing I don't like is queuing and that the shop itself is so small - it's impossible to view their products and make a decision, you need to know before you get to the counter.

Delicious baked goods - but agree that the original store on Bourke Street isn't suited for eating in. The flourless chocolate cake is fabulous.
