Chauvel Cinema

The Chauvel is in a marvelous old building: Paddington's historic Town Hall. It's grand and vaulted. Walking into the cinema with its big stage and red velvet curtains gives quite an impression. The foyer, and in particular the balcony overlooking Paddington's Reservoir Park, is an elegant place to sip a glass while waiting for your date. Some years ago Sydney's Lord Mayor Clover Moore saved the cinema from going under. Still, it's not exactly a commercial hub. The Chauvel shows many films that don't attract a big audience. I've attended a matinee or two when I wasn't sure there was anyone else actually in the theatre. Perhaps to make up for ticket shortfalls, the Chauvel also rents itself out as a venue. If you have an idea worthy of 250 seats and a silver screen, make an inquiry.
