Cheers Bar and Nightclub

When asking Sydneysiders about Cheers bar you are likely to receive a mixed response. Some will say that it's a seedy little sports bar on George St, others will tell you that while it isn't one of the best bars in Sydney it is ok thanks to $1 pool games and the fact they open from 9am - 6am daily. You'll find that I belong in the latter group. What can I say about Cheers? It's deceptively big for starters. It has 3 bars within the same building, George St. bar, the Mezz bar and the Basement bar.  

George St. bar, as the name suggests is the main bar and the first one you'll see upon arrival coming off the street. It'll serve the typical pub grub for a reasonable price and offers Irish beer. Other drinks are quite cheap with beers, wines and house spirits starting at $3.50 9pm - Midnight. On this level you'll find 2 rooms for pokies and a giant screen that will nearly always have some important sports game/match showing, whether it be live or a replay. The Mezzanine is home to the Mezz bar, a smaller version of the bar downstairs, it also boasts 4 pool tables, a jukebox and you'll find toilets located up there too. The Basement bar is home to a TAB until 6pm, a dart board and a few more pool tables. The Bistro is also located here. All 3 levels feature a multitude of plasma screens all showing some kind of sport. If you enjoy watching your sports chances are Cheers will have something catering to your interests. If you hate the very idea of watching sport, then Cheers is probably not the right place for you. 

The Basement bar has a different entrance, you'll find a neon sign that reads 'Cheers Nightclub' instead. It isn't a very large venue but it is usually packed with a mixed crowd. It stays open til round 4am - 4:30am. You'll know when the nightclub closes when a mass exodus occurs, some of which will enter the main bar and continue drinking til that closes too. I guess that is the main reason why I keep coming back. The fact that it closes at 6am and is a stone's throw away from Town Hall station means that after a night out my friends and I will have an alternative to George St. Maccas to kill time at whilst waiting for trains to start running again...
