Great olde worlde atmosphere but slightly surly service
It's one of the last holdouts - an old school pub in an almost Victorian era style, and very cosy. It's also cheap enough and a good, mixed crowd of professionals and hardened locals. It's just a shame then the service is a little surly, if not actively unfriendly. A more hail-fellow-well-met attitude, and this'd be the greatest pub in Sydney, hands down.
But I still want to drink there more than any other pub I can think of... :)
A local with ambience to burn
Eastern Sydney pubs come in many forms. There are the flash upscale oneslike the White Horse. There are the all-purpose sprawlers like The Dolphin or The Golden Sheaf. There are the quasi-dive bars like the Strand. And there are the genuine "locals" like the Lord Dudley and this one, The East Sydney Hotel. Decidedly mid-20th century in feel, with an eclectic clientele, this is the perfect spot for an after-work, or after-hours, drink. The service is nothing special, but the ambience makes up for it. Grab an excellent take-away pizza from Puntino, across the street, and you have the perfect plan for low-key beers and cheers.
"Yes, this is the pub with no pokies!"
A great pub with a mellow, comfy vibe...but I've found service a mixed bag. The place itself has an intimate, old-fashioned feel, and drinks are inexpensive. One could easily while away hours here, either in the cozy indoor area, or the outdoor seating (I certainly have). What's particularly great is that there are NO pokies here! (Sign quoted above.) I've found service to be adequate, though not stellar by any means. Nonetheless, it's one of my very favourite pubs in Sydney. BTW, they also offer simple, no-frills accommodation, old-fashioned pub lunches, and you can also get delivery of delicious pizzas from Puntino across the street.
