Sometimes it really is hard to give the right appraisal of a place because only a couple of minor things let you down... esp when one of those minor things is actually pretty bloody annoying.

The door service was great, the caramelised pork I had was so delicious I sometimes wake up at night having cravings and can hear it's siren song beckoning me forth. Decor is cute and unique, prices are right on the good side of things. Wine list is short but has merit (except the organic red I tried- it was vile, but thats my fault, I should have remembered my tongue doesnt like green red wine much)., desserts were killer and staff coping pretty well for  busy night...

So what let it down you ask?

The acoustics. The sound. I get that concrete floors with wood furniture are chich and easy to clean, but I had to shout all my way through dinner to be heard, had to crane in to hear. We gave up on conversation as the vibe was more akin to a rowdy pub night then a relaxed dinner. It sucks too because I would love to eat their food again, but just cannot bear the thought after coming home with a sore throat from shouting and the early part of a headache.

I know its cool right now to cover your venues in concrete and make for the vibrant vibe, but it just doesnt make for an intimate eating out experience for me- or even a fun one- to have to wail like a banshee at my companions.

Quirky, new, and surprising.

Redfern is going through a bit of a metamorphosis at the moment. Cool cafes are springing up and this is the latest, and possibly the coolest. At time of writing it had only been open for 1 week, but was already proving to be extremely popular. It's one of those places where a semi-derelict shop that had lain fallow for years suddenly transforms into the coolest place around. They've gone for a slightly 50s vibe (think Happy Days without being to kitsch). The menu is fairly short, but creatively delicious. I'm sure they plan to broaden their offer once they settle in. Scrumptious sandwiches and creative drinks. Licenced too. And I have to say the staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I haven't tried the coffee. I hope it lives up to the rest of the deal.
