A quirky gem

It is sort of like a treasure hunt to find Grasshopper Bar. Tip: the alley is just across from MidCity on George Street. It is very obscure. Last night it had a van parked in it. Don’t be scared, you shouldn’t get mugged, even though it is a bit dodgy.

It is definitely worth the hunt to find this eclectic watering hole. Catching up with another CU Maven last night, we enjoyed a couple of drinks – something with crushed mint and brandy. Served in jam jars. We perched on mid-century modern furniture that looked like it actually came out of the 70’s (not some new reproductions) and fully enjoyed our evening. For nibbles we had the charcuterie platter which was very generous and ample for two. We supplemented with olives which were varied and delicious.

The drinks are reasonably priced ($15 cocktails), innovative and strong. The service was friendly and attentive (great waiter named Mark). We had a chat to one of the owners, Martin, a self-proclaimed “ex-computer geek”, who is enthusiastic, fun and committed to his product. If you want a break from all those swanky, high-end bars, come and check out the Grasshopper for a relaxed atmosphere, great drinks and solid food.

Sydney finally has a destination to rival the great laneway bars of Melbourne. Finding it is the greatest challenge but you won't be disappointed. It's on Temperance Lane (off George Street) and you can feel the mood change as soon as you step off the well beaten track that is George Street and into the relaxed bar with its great selection of beers and array of cocktails served in jam jars (liked shared flats of old) and make yourself comfortable on preloved yet groovily chic furniture. Upstairs is the restaurant, which manages to stay connected with the cool vibes and eclectic music emanating from the bar below whilst retaining a sense of being just that little more private. Food is great but the atmosphere is even better.

Great vibe, quirky

It was previously an old printing shop but that was hard to tell when I walked down to the end of the laneway to find the lively buzz of people sitting on milk crates, filling both sides of the laneway and talking excitedly over glass jars of drinks. I reached a door and the buzz grows louder as I walk in and choose to go downstairs where the bar is surrounded by people chatting away cheerfully. I am relieved to find that it's not too 'crazy' and you don't have to shout at the top of your lungs.

My friend and I were lucky enough to find a group of people vacating their seats and they quickly told us to be quick to take their seats before we miss our chance. We happily accepted their offer and enjoyed the cosy interior.

There’s a great vibe at this place and even though it was a busy end of the week, my friend and I were able to catch up here although at some points we needed to raise our voices a little. Overally, I am not at all surprised it achieved 2010 Small Bar of the Year and Small Business of the Year.

A must-try

A must-try if you find yourself in the CBD in the evening.  Hipster-ish vibe with a fun and good-looking crowd -- almost has a speakeasy feel as you have to walk through a back alley to get there (which is a good thing, as it removes you from the sterile retail feel of the CBD). Takes its cocktail menu very seriously -- in the best way; and a very solid menu upstairs with modern takes on classic dishes.  Everything I tried was delicious.

Quite good

Great hide in the CBD near the main Apple store, a bit hard to find but that's what makes it special. The atmosphere is great as it is also above the Grasshopper bar - definitely make a booking. The food was quite good, delicious but not top notch for what I expected and for its price. Nonetheless, one of the better tasting restaurants for Modern Australian/European food in the CBD.
