Good neighbourhood bistro
Turns out High St Bistro is the place to be in Willoughby on a Saturday night. A booking was required, and only 6.30 or 8.30 were available. I can understand why. It's a very respectable bistro with tasty food, good service and a nice (if 40, 50 and 60-something) vibe. I enjoyed my duck confit and the sardines on toast (and olives) were excellent. Worth a visit if in the vicinity.
Desserts to Die For!
I love a good dessert and the 'Rosewater and pomegranate jelly, almond bavarois and meringue' was exquisite! Truly an unexpected pleasure seeing we really just went for coffee!!! My girlfriend had the Lavender brulee which was also delicious. There was no skimping on the portions either...very generous and indulgent.
The 'Salmon brandade, cornichons and sourdough' was lovely to share as a light lunch option. We would have liked more of these to choose from versus a full on meal. The sharing idea is fantastic for lunchtime and frankly leaves more room for those to die for desserts!
Thank you Chef!
Service is a joke!
We used to love the restaurant when it was Matrie Karl's and thought we would give the new one a try. Wish I hadn't. The service was soooo bad. I swear the staff were vision impaired. How does it take 15 min to bring a coffee when the place was empty - then when it arrived it was cold!!
Food was average. Don't bother, plenty of other good places in the area.
Excellent food, and a menu of hits
I loved the food at High Street Bistro, and I loved that the menu was an all-star roster of items - steak, duck confit, gnocchi in brown butter, warm chocolate cake, etc. And why shouldn't a restaurant serve everything that people want to eat? Especially as it all was cooked perfectly. The gnocchi was especially delicious...
The restaurant itself has a buzzy, informal feel, with what seems like a neighbourhood crowd - respectably dressed 40-something+ couples, groups of friends, and families with grown-up kids. My only small complaint was that it was a little bit on the noisy side - the restaurant was packed and it's full of hard surfaces - so it's probably best for a smaller group when it's a busy night.
All-in-all, a thumbs up to the High Street Bistro.
