HiveBar is a great new bar which has recently opened up in Erskineville. Downstairs is an intimate little bar witha relaxed vibe. Upstairs you'll find a room available for function hire. Generally I'd say that the HiveBar encourages a range of community events catering for the various needs of the locals: meetups, parties, art, etc. I would consider using this space if I wanted to host anything from a book group meeting through to an evening with a DJ. I hired the room out for a DJ music night and can only speak highly of the venue. Nick, the manager, was very relaxed and accommodating. Check it out.
Great neighbourhood bar - if only they were open later!
This is a great neighbourhood bar, and the quintessential example of Erskineville's transition from dingy poor cousin to next Newtown. The crowd is late 20s (not too young and raucous), good natured. For the packed crowds and relatively narrow spaces upstairs and down, it's pleasantly and efficiently run.
Drinks are very reasonably priced (I ordered the fanciest bourbon they had and didn't pay more than $8 a shot - you'd pay more like $12-$15 in Sydney's East), even if they don't yet have the greatest range of top shelf liquors.
The only bummer is that, because it's a residential area, they shut the doors at midnight, and start booting people out around 11.30pm - tragic for a place with the kind of vibe where you could imagine yourself staying into the wee hours.
That aside - and the closing hours may change one day, of course - the place is terrific and the first one I'll think of from now on for drinking / hanging out in the Newtown / Erskineville area.
good place to hang
A laidback bar with locally brewed beer
This is a small bar on erskinville rd, with a laidback vibe and nice beers. they sell beer from a local brewery around the corner is St Peters, which I dont believe is available anywhere else, or certainly not many places. The food is good too, with nice pizzas and snacks. Its definitely a cool place to have a few beers with friends on a weekend.
