I chose HSBC Australia for one reason: when I joined, there was no ATM fee for the first two withdrawals you made each month, NO MATTER WHAT THE BANK. I tolerated a cumbersome application process, unreceptive staff, and a long wait for my account to open just so I could take advantage of the no-ATM fee promise. I figured I could keep my withdrawals to less than three a month, and save money, which, on principle, I REALLY don’t think I should be paying for since it’s just a made-up fee. Imagine my surprise when HSBC changed its policy with no notice! Now I get slammed along with customers from every other bank, and I still have the surly staff to deal with. Great.
