Very pricey but unbelievably good - a truly great 5 star hotel
This is, by a thousand miles, reputed as Canberra's best hotel and it certainly lived up to that expectation on my first stay this past weekend.
It wasn't cheap (though the weekend rate of around $290 is a lot cheaper than the mid-week rate when it's packed with politicians and other VIPs). And that rate only covers the room. Everything else is eye-wateringly pricey: $39 for breakfast; $30 burgers (I have a weakness for room service burgers in good hotels).
But it is superbly good in all respects: a stunning hotel, fabulous bar (Speakers' Corner), incredibly attentive and effective service, etc.
Canberra's hotels, generally, are legendarily average in look, surly service and often high prices. This place blows them all away. If you can bring yourself to spend the money, it's one of the nicest places you'll likely ever stay in Australia.
Potentially wonderful but little things let it down
I've just been to Canberra to view the Fred Williams exhibition and stayed at the Hyatt. I've stayed here before and have been very happy and comfortable. This time I was disappointed, The Friday night seafood buffet was on and is apparently when "all the locals book in." The food was at best average with a limited choice - no smoked salmon, no calamari, no seafood soup (only broccoli soup on offer), predominantly non-seafood main courses - and all looked fairly tired despite the large crowd. Service was woeful. We had no salt on the table and when we asked for some, received a reply that it should be there but no offer to actually provide some. No spoons for dessert and again no response to our request for some to be provided. We ended up helping ourselves to soup spoons from the buffet to eat dessert. The restaurant was crowded so perhaps the staff were extra busy, but a hotel of this standing should surely make arrangements for what seems to be a regularly busy night.
Did really love the express checkout though.
