Australia Day...it's mania
Australia Day in Neilsen Park is not for the weak-of-heart. We arrived before 8am and the beach was practically full. People brought their tents, umbrellas, BBQs, clothes lines, and I may have spotted a sofa and some side tables. Ordering coffee from the Kiosk was hilarious. You wait for 30 minutes in line and then they give you a buzzer to pick up your order in another 30 mins. So if you really, really want your caffeine fix fast, forget the kiosk. I did see some tea kettles, plungers, and samovars about, so perhaps it was rather a time to make friends with your neighbours rather than depend on the barristas. Nevertheless, I felt proud of Australia for having this collection of families come out on a steamy mid-week holiday to swim, eat, and relax together. Nielsen Park Kiosk will be there on quiet days when I am sure the staff will be a lot less harried. Even so, they did a mighty fine job with the masses today.

Let's make no mistake, Nielsen Park is one of the most beautiful places in Sydney. I have a friend who used to live nearby who describes it as her "dreaming" and becomes anxious if she hasn't been there for a while. I completely understand this - it is a magical place. BUT I'm afraid I have to complain about my treatment at the Kiosk on a recent visit. I was there with my bouncing ten-month old in his enormous and heavy stroller. I heaved said stroller up the steps into the kiosk and waited in the queue for 15 minutes or so only to be told, in no uncertain terms "I can't start your order unless you have a table number". "But I don't have a table yet". "Well you'll have to go and choose one before you order any food". "I just want a coffee and a cupcake". "I can't process your order without a number - go and choose one". Well, you can't leave a baby in a busy cafe, can you? So I heaved the stroller back down the steps, put the nappy bag on a table, heaved the stroller back up again and rejoined the end of the queue. Another 10 minutes and I was finally able to place my order. The coffee and cake when it came were not particularly good. So disappointing - and it's not as if you can go somewhere else. You're a captive customer and they take full advantage.
