Beautiful venue - shame about the rude staff

I kept hearing about the Norfolk and how it had been taken over by "Surry Hills hipsters" since undergoing a reno. Because it falls almost directly between my house and my work, I was keen to check it out. We had work drinks there one night and I was impressed with the venue - great beer garden, if you can get a seat. Funky decor inside. But, man, what's with the staff? There was one girl in particular who could not have been more rude to us despite the whopping bar tab we accrued. Were we not "Surry Hills Hipster" enough for her? Perhaps. To give an example, I went to the bar to order 3 beers. I asked for a beer that had apparently run out and although she handed me the 2 other beers I ordered, and took my money, she never came back with the third. After watching her serve another customer, she bothered to turn around and let me know that the beer I asked for had run out. It could take a couple of minutes to change the keg, she told me. Ah, thanks for the update.

I've since been back to the Norfolk and the same girl has been behind the bar twice. Others commented on her rudeness. But this part weekend, she wasn't there and instead I encountered a nice young lady who helped with the cigarette machine that apparently needs to be activated by a remote control from behind the bar???

All in all, I'll be back to the Norfolk but I'd sure like it if the staff had an attitude adjustment.

Yay for an awesome local!

This place is awesome. Seriously. After seeing basic old man dreay joints in Redfern for the last 8 years I have lived there, the Norfolk is a breath of fresh air.

It has a great selection of cheap snacks that are delicious and not your usual Sydney pub fare (awesome pork sandwich and HotDog sliders) plus more substantial food (to die for slow cooked lab sandwich is one fine example) and the drinks are cheapish for a decent pub, and it isn't just doing the same old, same old.

This is great to see- something that isnt for stilettos and over primping yourself, but isn't for slobbering drunks with nothing better to do. Thank f#ck for the Norfolk I say!

this is a great location but.

the food disappointed.

the staff over all are a bit un customer service focused.

and what is with the security on the door where they think this is.

its the only pub in redfern i know of with security who are they hoping to have come to the place????

disappointed that they have down graded a local pub to something i'd expect to find in liverpool across from the footy (sorry to the liverpoolians but you get my point i hope)

give it a miss till they get it together.

I love my new local!

Great pub, good food (I'm obsessed with the deep fried pickles)  and they even welcome dogs in the beer garden.

I love my new local - my only gripe is that it gets so busy we've had to go elsewhere on several occasions because there weren't any tables available.

don't believe the hype

Everyone is going on about how fabulous this place is but really: whatever. Have been here twice now and it's not that great.

The food is average, nothing special at all. The salt & pepper calamari is bad (baby octopus are NOT calamari); the fries so salty we couldn't eat them; the tacos average and expensive for what they are.

The drinks are average. There are no interesting beers on tap. The wine is fine but nothing special.

And the staff (except that one lovely tall guy who brings out the food) are straight-up rude. Clearly all far too cool for school and important to be working behind a bar, the first time I went there it was all they could do to not actually sneer at me.

The only thing that saves this place is the excellent outdoor area.
