Don't Bother
Whenever I walk past this store I always call in - I have bought many presents and books from here and have probably spent around $1000 there. However after my experiance today I won't give my business there again and will urge everyone else I know not to bother with a shop that doesn't bother with its customers.
The merchandise is over-priced, which I overlooked as it is a convenient location. But over-priced and arrogant is too much! I was made to feel like a thief for writing down the name of a book! As they said I was going to try and find it somewhere else at a better price. I was already buying one book and was writing down the name of another as I thought it may make a good christmas present for my father. Looks like I won't be buying it or any other thing from there again.
They have a weird approach to customer service, as if they are doing you a favor exisiting as a shop and you are lucky they let you in the door! Perhaps they feel they can treat customers how they wish as they are busy part of the street. It's ridiculous that people aren't allowed to write down titles of books or objects! And then are made to feel embarresed for doing something allowed in every other shop. I lodged a conduct complaint against the business with the ACCC ph 1300 302 502.

I stumbled across this website looking for Pentimento's opening hours. I am grateful for finding these reviews.
I have regularly enjoyed browsing through this store. I have never made a purchase because the customer service is so lacking. I will now cancel my planned shopping expedition after hearing these reviews. There are plenty of like stores in Newtown. For those hard to find items, I've discovered the Notemaker site also.
Customer service is atrocious
I used to shop here all the time until I had a run-in with an incredibly rude member of staff. I firstly heard the way she was speaking to a co-worker and was shocked, but it was when I asked for assistance with something and she looked at me as if I smelt bad or was a huge inconvenience to her, then waved her hand toward the back of the store. I later described the woman to a mutual friend and she told me that this woman is the owner of the store! Honestly, the store is rather run-of-the-mill and incredibly overpriced so I haven't missed shopping there, but I would also encourage other shoppers to consider shopping in other places. People who treat customers that rudely shouldn't be given our custom.
Appalling staff attitude. These guys have an old & loyal customer base they no longer deserve.
It's a real shame this store has been ruined for me by their lack of customer service & care.
The products they stock are lovely & they're lucky to be one of a few selected retailers for certain items. However, staff are abrupt & unhelpful, & even downright rude. I will make every effort to shop elsewhere for products sold at this store because I am happy to pay (more even) to be treated with respect.
For alternative retailers within Australia, try NoteMaker in Melbourne or Du Monde in Brisbane. In searching for items of limited stock, I have found these two stores to be much more willing to suggest other places I might try & even get in touch with their stockist for me. You'll have to take my word that I'm not affiliated with either, but am a mere university student on a scholarship (i.e. I don't have a part-time job).
I hope this message gets around & stores realise that customers are still looking for service (or else we'd just shop online for everything!)

What a great shop! If I am ever looking for a gift I am guaranteed to find it here - either a book, a necklace, fridge magnet, bag, toy or whatever else looks cool and trendy. The window display changes every week and is always impressive and enticing. I seem to buy some lovely handmade cards and wrapping paper here every week. A truly lovely shop that will not disappoint and the staff are always very helpful.
