Good Food, Worst Service

The pizza was good, and so was the gelato, however, the price for gelato was overpriced. The service was one of the worst service i've ever experienced, i made a reservation for 20 people at 7 p.m., i only got the table at 8p.m., and when i got the table, it could only fit 16 people and the manager refused to add 1 more table for us.

Still the best in Bondi

Signor Pompei moves through the tables, his face inscrutable.  He is holding a little cup of his perfect gelato and as he reaches the table next to ours he beams down at the young toddler as he hands her the cup.  I recognise the mother, and deduce, from the child's happy warmth that she is Signorina Pompei - I try to imagine what it must be like to grow up in the midst of a busy pizzeria, surrounded by noise, life and delicious food, a rhythm punctuated by offerings of perfect, fresh sorbetto delivered by your father. Giulietta is a lucky girl.  The rest of us happily pay for the pleasure of crispy, thin, flavoursome pizza, expertly made fresh ravioli and of course the true gelato that ends every meal.  I sometimes come here in the afternoons with my son, after school, and in winter I stray from the gelato counter for the oozy warmth of their authentic cioccolata calda (italian hot chocolate) which always manages to transport me to a little bar in a piazza far away.

Gelato that tastes like the real thing...but better!

This gelato is more like cold mousse than ice cream. Pistachio that tastes like nuts rather than green creamy goo. Raspberry with seeds that stick between your teeth. Stracciatella with divine vanilla and delicate chocolate bits. And then there is the seasonal white peach or white nectarine... you have never tasted anything like it... well you have, when you chomp into the real  fruit. Seriously, don't bother with any of the other joints at  the beach, this gelato is a taste experience.

Relaxing Bondi brunch

Pompei is the most laid - back, relaxed brunch you'll find in Bondi Beach. There's never a long wait, the staff is super friendly (and have cute accents) and they have piles of magazines and newspapers to read.

Only downside is limited, and somewhat dark, indoor seating area.

My pick as the best pizza and gelato in the eastern suburbs

My pick as the best pizza and gelato in the eastern suburbs- thin, crispy pizza with simple, authentic Italian toppings (the Parma and the Quattro Formaggi are both divine). Try the White Nectarine and Blood Orange gelato, or the Amadei 70% chocolate. Just off Campbell Parade in Bondi, between 5pm and 8pm this restaurant is very popular with families and correspondingly chaotic (one of our party described it as a little like dining in a daycare centre). It's much quieter after 8pm, when the kids go home to bed.
