Great flight to Melbourne - though not sure if there's much of a differentiator against budget airlines.

Middling these days...

As a Qantas frequent flyer I have flown Qantas for years.  Then Air NZ started direct flights to my home town in NZ and so I flew Air NZ to Rotorua ... The comparison was not good - for Qantas.

Air NZ had more legroom (a big plus!), the cabin staff actually seemed happy rather than stressed and the food was excellent.

I'm afraid my loyalty and patience has run out with Qantas and if I fly with them now it will purely be on price.

Will always fly Qantas as long as safety is #1

Having worked in the travel industry for many years, including with airlines, I know that the airline industry is a horrible business. So I am more sympathetic than most people when I am on the wrong side of a foul-up - no matter what the airline. That said, I cannot abide institutionalised foul-ups like crabby cabin crew, cramped seating, poor entertainment and bad food.

Qantas is always my first choice when flying, mostly for its commitment to safety but also for its efforts to provide a quality service. Things do go wrong and I can forgive those. And I never complain about delays due to engineering issues. Ever. I can't believe the idiots who do.

As long as the commitment to safety as the #1 priority remains, I will continue to fly Qantas as my first choice. If that goes, so do I.

A great company destroyed by executive greed

The shareholders might do all right out of Qantas. The senior management do a lot better. But the passengers have been ignored by decision-makers intent on cutting staff and lowering standards in order to divert money into the boots of executive BMWs. Cabin crew have lost the friendliness and sparkle of past years, and that's understandable given the attitude of the people who run the place. If you want to see the new form of capitalism, where profits are maintained by gouging the customers regardless of market conditions, Qantas is a prime example.

The airline has generally let me down in the gap between the promise of the product and the delivery

Australia's flagship airline is a top ten global airline. They cover the destinations that I want and the in air product is world class. They also treat me very well given my frequent flyer status. Their first class lounge at Sydney airport is the best part of any business trip that I do. All that should add up to a five star rating - but I am only going to give them a three. It is not enough to have the best coverage, great product and luxury add ons. Qantas falls from 5 to 3 stars because they under deliver on their promises and charge more than comparable airlines (Cathay, BA, Virgin Atlantic). Too often the staff have not delivered the right level of service, the airline has charged too much and the airline has generally let me down in the gap between the promise of the product and the delivery of the product.

Competent airline but the service and attitude needs work

Overall, though theirs are certainly not the friendliest skies, they’re a reliably competent airline delivering professional service, with well trained staff and the deals are normally pretty good if you do a little waiting and snooping around.

Hard to escape the flying kangaroo

Great service

You cannot avoid the Flying Kangaroo when taking to the air to reach some parts of Australia. And, that’s not all bad. Qantas tries to improve its service to passengers through upgraded entertainment systems, Marc Newsom designs, and cuisine that features good Aussie food and wines. However, they still operate like an old style airline and charge a premium. I’ve enjoyed their trans-Pacific service, but confess that I look forward to sampling in-flight services on new competitors on these routes. And I wouldn't mind if they offered some better fare deals...

Great in-flight product, but...

I have mixed feelings about Qantas. On one hand: they deliver a top quality in-flight product, with nice cabins, generally good food, and generally good service. And, when I had premium flyer status, the phone and other service was very responsive, flexible, and friendly. On the other hand: some of their policies seem to be deliberately designed to be obstructive – for example, the difficulty in using vouchers (why must you book an e-ticket seven days in advance if you want to redeem a voucher?). And why is the price for the same flights significantly higher if they are booked ex-Australia than ex-US? But overall: I’m positive, and, due to the woeful state of most other airlines, have Qantas as my preferred provider.

A real mixed bag

They’re a real mixed bag – good at everything, some of the time, but periodically compromised by lateness, and annoyingly inaccessible frequent flyer bookings. At the moment I like them - they don't seem to be running as late as usual - that may well change.

Solid Airline

Having come from the states, Qantas is great.  Only Virgin Air has been better to fly back to the states.  My only complaint is that they dropped their direct to SFO flight so now I have to fly United, which is horrible internationally.

The employee strikes really frustrate me, because they just hurt passengers.
