Just fabulous
Wine and steak. Oysters. A beautiful room. You can’t beat Rockpool for that glam dinner with all the trimmings. Grab a drink in the bar before sitting down in the chic bar, and then move through to the dining room. Soaring ceilings and big comfy chairs. Our table shared oysters, calamari, pork belly & chorizo appetizers – the standout being the creamy oysters which were divine. Steak all around with mushy peas (egg on top). French fries, carrots & mushrooms sautéed in butter. Red wine, from France (am a wine ignorant so do not know model or make), was delicious. Just fabulous.
5 star service - what a great team on the floor
I have read the CU reviews (to date) for Rockpool Bar & Grill and agree with pretty much everything already written. The food is outstanding, the menus extensive, the setting architecturally impressive, and the bill better taken care of by someone else... But for me it is the service at Rockpool B&G that is the real selling point. It is one of those places that 'gets it'. The service staff were all extremely knowledgeable yet still friendly and non-patronizing. Our main table waiter was great and had me salivating over the way she described the oysters, although I don't eat them! They pre-empted our every move, helped us with wine choices, kept our glasses (respectfully) full, kept our table exceptionally tidy, and always looked like they were enjoying taking care of us. I'm trying to think of the last place that did that in Sydney and I'm still scratching my head.
Well done Rockpool for choosing, inspiring and training your staff well.
Superb food surrounded by old world glamour
If I could find fault with this restaurant, it would be that there is too much choice! The red wine list is literally a book and the menu is extensive. But with some polite and interesting help from the very knowledgeable staff our choices were made. Our table had the Beetroot salad, a ham platter with pickles, and two Alaskan Crab Cocktails for starters. Everything was delicious, beautifully presented and substantial in size.
Main courses were the Partridge, a Cape Grimm Rib-eye steak and the Prawns with Goats Cheese Tortellini. Sides included the mushy peas with egg (sounds bizarre but really works), grilled broccolini and the onion rings. Oh, the onion rings. Beautifully crispy, deliciously salty... ohhhh. All the mains were delicious and every morsel was eaten.
Petit fours for dessert, and I can't wait to eat the last of the salted caramels I have hidden in my handbag. Yum.
The restaurant itself is amazing, the large art deco space is perfect. The service was incredible. It was fantastic to be able to hand all wine choices to a very competent sommelier.
Will definitely return, soon!
Mad Men dining done in Sydney
Easy to like when you're not paying the bill
I've been to Rockpool B&G a couple of times now. Each was a client dinner for 15+ people in a private room. The steak was delicious, the drinks flowed freely and the rooms and atmosphere were excellent. I thought it was a superior place, although admittedly I was not paying the bill!
The steaks are excellent but good lord you pay for it...
Ok, the steaks here - in all manner of cuts and styles - are delicious, but they're extremely expensive (around $50 and up) and, as usual with the fancy places, that's just the beginning, for there are sides you'll want (none included in your main's price) and you'll feel like one of the excellent cocktails, whiskeys, or something from an amazing winelist.
So it's a special occasion place (unless someone else is paying, of course). But it is terrific.
Stuffy, over-priced and over-rated
After hearing great reviews, I was excited to try Rockpool for an impromptu after work drink. The excitement lasted all of 30 seconds. Upon walking up to the bar, was told, "you can't stand here" by a server with clearly no customer service skills, we were then approached by another server to see whether we would be waiting for a table and before we could even say no, he had turned his back on us to walk-away. After ordering two glasses of wine we were given a bill for double the price (who only puts prices for half glasses on a menu?). The atmosphere is pretentious, the staff is rude and Rockpool turned out to be by far my least favourite drinking experience in Sydney.
