Amazing art, but don't expect to be welcomed
There's an old joke about the bars in Melbourne, that you have to through six lane ways, find a fruit stall, press the right peach and a secret door will open to the bar. Finding Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery for the first time is a little like this, those who know, just KNOW.
Many will be familiar with Roslyn Oxley9 from it being in the media in 2008, as police carted away shrouded works by the infamous (and wonderful) Bill Henson. It is a top draw gallery, a fine supporter of Australian arts, where many big names and big prices can be found.
Once you're in, you are faced with a great space, perfect for large canvases or works. While it's quiet enough to allow serious contemplation.
The major drawback to the gallery is the lack of welcoming atmosphere. As someone who works in the arts, I'm fairly comfortable in most exhibition spaces, but upon visiting Roslyn Oxley9 I immediately felt like I was out of place. Sure, it is unlikely that I can afford the multi-thousand dollar price tags, but one day maybe I will. Doesn't that deserves a smile, a welcome or even some eye contact?
Back in my office I asked a colleague how they experienced the same gallery, and she felt exactly the same way.
The challenge of creating viable arts audiences and passionate advocates for Australian artists is one faced by all venues, not just out public ones. While Roslyn Oxley9 has the quality to draw the crowds, surely they could put a bit of effort into their customer orientation?
