Best Mojito's ! !
Hands down the best mojitos in Sydney, and the view is pretty special too !
My favourite haunt in Manly
I have never had any problems here - the food is always at a high standard and the cocktails are some of the best around. I come so often that I'm on first name terms with a lot of the staff, who are always friendly and can't do enough for you. The Friday night special they do ($5 pizzas, $5 beers, $5 house spirits) is awesome and really sets you up for an inexpensive night, its always packed too so there's a great atmosphere as well.
Nope.
As a business owner, I understand the difficulties of running a business. So, I was fully prepared to give the Sugar Lounge every benefit of the doubt. This place used to be Henry Afrikas, but has recently changed hands. Great location on the beach in Manly and beautiful lounge build out should make it a great spot for drinks. Not so. I went here with girlfriends for cocktails this past weekend, and it was a nightmare. Firstly, there was no cocktail menu because they are under new ownership. OK, I can appreciate that. And I tried to keep it simple by ordering a Whiskey Sour, but it was not to be. Took two guys exchanging the recipe and 20 minutes of standing at the bar watching them painstakingly measure out ingredients to get the drink. OK, so they are learning to bartend. No dramas. Then go to pay for the drink, and they try to charge a surcharge for Sunday. Well, we all know that that is illegal to charge holiday and Sunday premiums (see article in Sydney Morning Herald at http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/restaurants-flout-ban-on-weekend-surcharges-20100611-y3lb.html) so I nicely informed the gentleman of that fact. He made a fuss and went into the backroom, left us standing there for 10 minutes before coming back and snidely saying, "Well, you are right, but it is legal if we post it on our website, which we do, so we are in compliance." Actually, I am being generous. He didn't say it that nicely at all and would prob. never use the word "compliance." And he was dead wrong about the facts. And they don't even have a working website at all! In any case, he didn't make us pay the surcharge, but the entire exchange left a really bad taste in my mouth. And then my whiskey sour was def. watery, and a little exy at $17 for a small glass... Ok, so we sat down with our hard-won drinks. Whew. But it didn't end there! The guys behind the bar were on those 2-way walky-talkies which were set to MAX volume. So our girly conversation was punctuated with really loud staccato radiotalk. Anywhoo, to make a long story short, they didn't have the lights right so we couldn't see, the staff was not helpful and we drank our one drink and left to go to Manly Wine where it was filled with young people having fun. And the wine was good. And best of all, no Sunday surcharge!
Great for lunch!
A great place to dive into off the beach for some good tasting grub and savvy drinks.
