A beautiful, welcoming space
As a kid I loved the local library. A voracious reader from a young age, I looked forward to our weekly visit when I could bring home stacks of books. But I never spent time reading there. It was a fast food type of joint, in, collect and go.
Surry Hills Library is not the McDonalds of the reading world. Surry Hills Library is a fine dining restuarant, a three hatted venue. In fact, Surry Hills Library may just be the Quay of reading.
Gorgeous architecture, light filled, but with hidden spaces for desks and small meetings, the library is designed well for multiple uses. Generally kids reading time is done upstairs, when the serious workers and readers are downstairs, but I have to admit the noise can travel, so 3pm is not the best time for productivity.
The staff are courteous and knowledgeable, and there's free wireless along with the many available computers.
As a student it is a home away from home.
I'd rather they put the money into resources than renovation
Don't get me wrong, I love how beautiful the library looks- its just that they really don't have much in the way of modern books. Or even modern learning aids.
Have been there looking for:
Psychology
Marketing
Consumer Behaviour
Writing techniques
And found not much to be honest... and what I did find was pretty dated.
Guess it is the same old problem of the libraries simply not getting enough funds, which really does suck. BUT, the building is really beautiful and I can't help wondering if maybe shuffling a little cash out of the structure into the actual resources themselves might have been smart.
Staff are pretty nice... usual sort of aloof group. It has a nice vibe in the library, I'd just prefer a few more up to date texts and info is all.
