When I die of a heart attack, it's going to be here

This French bistro in Surry Hills is a classic of the genre - favourite dishes prepared well, and really warm, knowledgeable service (putting paid to all those stereotypes about the snooty French).  The souffle is divine, as is the cassoulet, just perfect for putting on those extra winter kilos.  And the boudin noir is fantastic, if you like that sort of a thing (this little carnivore does).  Not a place to go if you're on a low-cholesterol diet, but these peeps know the soul-enhancing power of good food, prepared and served well - the last time I was there, the chef came out from the kitchen to see for himself the short chick who'd ordered every fattening heart attack dish on the menu - souffle, boudin noir followed by cheese just in case there were any clear arteries left - and sensibly prescribed the health benefits of another glass of good French wine.

It wasn't supposed to be a 7 hour lunch - really it wasn't...

Booking for lunch at Tabou with Champagne Jayne, it was, with the benefit of hindsight, unrealistic to expect that we would be done by 2.30pm. Mais non.Nor could we have expected Energy Australia to flip the switch in Surry Hills as we walked in the door.  The unflappable lady manager simply shrugged, grinned from ear to ear and said "well, we have no oven and limited stove top but can offer you duck confit and a gorgeous selection of cold platters." Happily those offers worked well with the Grand Cru bubbles in our cooler bag so we stayed. For 7 hours or more, I can't really be sure.  Dinner guests  arrived. And left. Still, we slurped and munched and still our gorgeous restaurant manager smiled and chatted without missing a beat. I think the power had returned by the time we left, but I can't be sure about that either.

You can be sure though dear reader, be sure to try Tabou, and if you can get a gig with Champagne Jayne (you'll find her on the web) you'll leave knowing a whole lot more about champagne than when you arrived.

A diet-breaker, but what a great one!

This is the place to indulge that, hopefully not-too-often craving for the rich, French stuff - souffles, goat's cheese done various ways, superb fries, fabulous and often enormous steaks.

Excellent French wines also abound, along with still fine service. And it's not even too pricey, retaining its Surry Hills bistro roots.

It's about my favourite French eatery in Sydney, though your heart specialist recommends not visiting too frequently.
