Bury me in a vat of your eggs

Ok so I have two minds about this whole Redfern becomes trendy thing. I like the fact I can get decent nosh within a junkie's spitting loogey distance but conversely, I am a little resentful I am tripping over hipsters instead of tripping due to a slide in the aforesaid junkie loogey. My problems with the current uptake of bicycle wielding white collar metrosexuals trying to be low grade/underground aside, Tapeo is a meritious new introduction to the breaky roster.

These guys just get service. They don't dance about or sigh looking for attention and they don't have their noses pointed at the ceiling either. It's like being in the hands of a team of Spanish (or South American) ninjas who just know when to pounce to offer coffee, food or water. I feel welcome, not judged. I feel unhurried but not forgotten. I really dig this joint... to the point where I wonder if writing a review is a good thing, considering their limited table space.

The breaky menu is a little limited and maybe a little left of centre of what you would expect in Aus, but I like that. I like too that they don't try and turn you into a heart foundation candidate for "have 4 heart attacks, get one free" nor do they tease you with a portion made for Kate Moss during her 'lettuce and cocaine' phase. I get something tasty and exotic, my more vanilla partner gets his standard egg with tomato and we leave happy.

Personally, I know everyone raves about the two other cafes in close proximity and with just cause, but for me, Tapeo is it. Only issue is when to come for dinner and check out the tapas.

Eggs with a Spanish flair

Tried their breakfast here the other day. Ordered the Tapeo egg. I figured it was their namesake, so they couldn't get it wrong. I wasn't dissapointed, with free range omelette, salad, fetta cheese and fresh sourdough bread. There are other menu items, with quite a bit of zing - variations with capsicum, chorizo, and the like.

As always, the people watching was great. Hipsters with ironic, studiously groomed beards, flitting among grizzled locals who couldn't care less what the length of their facial hair was.
