What a monopoly looks like... (and it ain't pretty)
There's no real competition for cab services in Sydney, hence the "service" one gets from Taxis Combined - some good drivers, but many who don't care and, above all, don't know any streets, how to read a map, and are helpless without a perfectly functioning GPS device to lean on.
The special 'bonus' charges for using EFTPOS / credit cards are an outrage and the booking service is not reliable - drivers will or won't turn up, esp. at busy times like Christmas and, you'll be surprised to learn, a confirmed booking by phone doesn't actually guarantee a cab will show up unless a driver further agrees to take the job.
But as Marzipan suggests - what can you do? There's not much other cab choice in Sydney. Grrr...
Annoying, but got me home
What’s up with Taxi cab companies charging 10% to use your debit card?? I wouldn’t care if they charge a small fee to cover the cost of running the card through (whatever Visa or Mastercard charges) but I am NOT happy about them making a spread! It seems like they should be in the business of proving great service, not skimming and nickel-and-diming people. Obviously am ranting, but this happened to me when I took Taxi’s Combined from Manly to the Sydney CBD. It was an expensive fare, so the 10% was big. And they didn’t tell me about it on the phone when I asked if they take debit cards. I would have gotten out cash, had I known!
But besides this rant, the service was ok. Really annoying automatic phone booking system that didn’t understand anything that I said (really, how hard is it to recognize the word “YES”). But a taxi did show up, and a text message came in 3 minutes before the cab pulled up to the house. The car was clean. The guy was rude. And his driving was terrible. But I did get home quickly. I have a bad taste in my mouth (this was the second time that I used Taxi’s Combined) but I will probably use them again when I need to get back to the city. Bleh.
Re: Taxis Combined
Thank you for your feedback with regards to Taxis Combined.
Please be assured that we are not a monopoly, with a number of other Taxi fleets operating in greater Sydney.
The Christmas period is a very busy time for Taxi Cabs and we do our best to service all our customers during this period of high demand.
