Hit and miss...
Set off in a quiet street in Woolloomooloo, Toby's is the perfect spot for a cafe, a place befit for a quick business meeting, to catch up with your bff or even to catch a breather away from the office. Their salads are fresh and well dressed. Their coffee, however make for an interesting experience…
The first time I ordered a flat white from Toby's, I had to go again to check if it was some tradition or policy in serving a distinctly lukewarm coffee. Even after the second time, I was somehow compelled enough after a similar experience the second time round that I went there a third time - only now for a latte to see if the trend continued to other orders. (That's not to say the taste was bad or the beans burnt - the lack of temperature was getting to me…)
Whether it's my luck in taking three orders to get a hot coffee, my lack of assertiveness in explicitly asking for a 'hot' coffee, or being a non-aficionado of coffee or being unable to appreciate flat whites at a cold temperature, Toby's has taught me one thing: I definitely enjoy my coffee hot.
I want to like it more than I do
The service here has improved significantly - it's more personal and more competent - and the coffee has always been good, if you like the chocolatey Toby's blend, but I still don't love the place. Probably two main reasons: the food, which is ok but not great (sandwiches too bready, breakfast eggs not up to snuff), and the small tables, which preclude newspaper reading (a cardinal sin in a cafe). However the weekend and late afternoon opening hours make it a convenient option when other places (e.g. Collier's) are closed.
Great coffee, Nice food but poor service
I have eaten here 5 times and each time i have enjoyed my meal and especially the coffee. The only complaint i have is the service... I have been wrongly charged 3 times (too little each time).. and been served the wrong meal 2 times.
I think the overall food/ coffee make up for the service, but would enjoy the place more if the service improved..
Friendly and functional
Friendly staff, great coffee
Friendly staff, great coffee, even better light lunch (yummy bruschetta!). Very nice juices too. A friend took me there and I am determined to make it our official meeting place. Small cosy venue with a few chairs outside
Delicious coffee, unpredictable timing
Toby’s makes great coffee and has several tasty food items; the interior is warm, and relatively comfortable, and the staff are always friendly. Yet I can’t give them the highest possible rating because of the cafe’s unpredictable service – specifically, the highly variable arrival (and sequencing) time of one’s order. All too often (at least fortnightly, and I go to the cafe at least 3-4x per week), food and/or coffee is significantly delayed. Or, one item arrives quickly (e.g., coffee) but the other doesn’t come for ages, by which time I’ve given up or am so anxious about my order that I’ve lost the relaxation that’s the whole point of a cafe meal. As the service is very friendly, the fault clearly lies in the operations of the place – somehow orders don’t seem to be timed or sequenced together. Two other minor gripes: most of the tables are small (so it’s difficult to read the paper & eat) and the newspaper availability is spotty. Bring your own! Despite all of the above, I keep going back – partly driven by proximity, but mostly by the excellent coffee and a few very tasty food items (the goats cheese, pesto, and roast tomato toast is delicious). If they improved the consistency of their speed, and always had the paper, I’d be able to give them my whole-hearted thumbs up.
Mixed feelings
I had a soup here that rocked my socks off... it was healthy, chunky, filling, tummy warming and one of the best cafe soups I have ever had.
I had a couple of coffee's here and I have recieved more a cup of warm milk. I do prefer my coffee stronger than most it's true but... well... when I feel like a kitten lapping from a bowl as opposed to getting something to wake me up or give me that lovely coffee taste I adore, I do have to send it back. Which I have done... maybe 3 times now.
Service can be a little patchy. Can be long for no reason and I have felt on occasion like a dangling thread on a coat, just wafting and waiting for someone to set me free of just hanging about.
Had a tasty breaky, it was top notch, full of full cheddar flavour and really nice ham.
Love the decor, esp up the back. I do enjoy taking people there for meetings as it adds a little more to that meeting in times of style, atmosphere and so on... but I think in reality if there was something with the same feel in the immediate area with actual coffee instead of kitten feed, I'd forget these guys.
The best coffee in East Sydney!
Great food and one of the best places for coffee in The East. Staff are always chirpy & full of beans (no pun intended!), the food is of high quality & coffee is very very good.
Its superb seating out front in the northern sun on a chilly autumn morning.
One of my favourite places in Sydney for breakfast.
