Peter completely surprised me by teaching me the art of a great shoe shine. I was used to shining my own leather and hadn't planned to get my boots done-up as I strolled through Strand Arcade one rainy afternoon, but as I walked by I was drawn into the dignified set-up that comes from self-respect and a respect for the kind of footwear that you don't have to replace every season.
