The Prince Consort's Shoe Shine Service review by BMZ

Good for the soul as well as your soles

Peter completely surprised me by teaching me the art of a great shoe shine. I was used to shining my own leather and hadn't planned to get my boots done-up as I strolled through Strand Arcade one rainy afternoon, but as I walked by I was drawn into the dignified set-up that comes from self-respect and a respect for the kind of footwear that you don't have to replace every season. I was totally impressed with the way my boots have worn since the shine-- through the winter's rains without getting soggy or dull. Treat yourself to a shine... truly good for your soles.

Bodhi Restaurant Sydney review by BMZ

Dim Sum and then some...

Bodhi sits under (appropriately) a tree in scenic Sydney Park near the Cathedral. The food is delish with steamed dumplings, rice rolls, and desserts that will surprise you. As a bonus, you don't have to try to distinguish the chicken from the pork as it is all vegetarian fare. My only issue is that on a rainy day the inside seating is dark and cramped. On a sunny day, however, nothing beats it.

Organic Produce Cafe review by BMZ

Delicious & nutritious ... and it just so happens to be conveniently organic

The big green "O" is found amongst a popular cafe row on Crown Street. It is worth observing the sidewalk flow to see how this place sets itself apart with a enthusiastic set of regulars. The chef is working some magic here with hearty, spicy meals that so happen to be free from the bad stuff. I've been enjoying the soups this winter which are substantial. I also like the range of salads and take-away options at the front counter and some grocery items as well. Keep reading »

Toby's Estate: Woolloomooloo review by BMZ

Friendly and functional

Toby's at Woolloomooloo has a corner position near that great Gorilla Gardener's street sculpture. It gets great morning light and I am a fan of the staff. The new kitchen upgrade they've done makes it a bit more crowded for patrons but ultimately more functional for the cramped baristas. The Toby's Breakfast Blend is worth the trip alone and if you can get seats at the common table it's a wonderful place to have a working meeting. Like the sculpture that sits near it, this cafe has a distinctly Woolloomooloo neighbourhood vibe about it.

Paper Couture review by BMZ

Sheets of all shapes and sizes....

Serious stationary voyeurs find this shop tucked humbly into South Dowling Street near the arts school. The store has a nice vintage vibe. The owner, Jo, has amassed a treasure chest of papers, prints, ribbons, and clips.  The handmade letterpress envelopes are my new favourite gift.  Jo also does a range of made-to-order invitations and paper design.

Terrace Spa Retreat review by BMZ

Highly recommended as a holistic beauty sanctuary

Terrace Spa Retreat is a marvelous retreat.  They carry high quality natural products and offer a different kind of day spa experience in Sydney. They have an extensive range of spa services and I go back especially for the facials. They use a combination of natural products that I haven't found anywhere else. It's a nice private sanctuary and parking is easy on the side streets on that stretch of Bourke Street.

Edgecliff Laundrette review by BMZ

When you don't want to be taken to the cleaners...

The proprietors of Edgecliff Laundrette get the job done well, for a decent price, and on time. Also, they have generous opening hours so you don’t feel like your clothes languish away in drycleaners’ captivity. For environmental reasons I wish they didn’t return things in plastic bags, but that’s really an issue with the industry at large. Alternatives anyone?

Flat White Cafe review by BMZ

4
They take their coffee - not themselves - seriously

Flat White maintains snobbishly high food and service standards without being snobby. The vibe is friendly and casual. Whether you are in a rush or would like to camp out awhile, Flat White usually accommodates. On the downside: the secret is out.  Weekend mornings will be crowded.

Chee Soon & Fitzgerald review by BMZ

Intriguingly eclectic, just like its name

While strolling down Crown Street it's worth a peek into CSF. They feature contemporary designers with a specialty in fabrics. The mix is broad without being unwieldy. It's the unlikely pairings they suggest that I appreciate most. And, if you are searching for a gift for someone who has everything, the guys here have always been a wellspring of ideas.

Chauvel Cinema review by BMZ

You take me back to the grand old days of cinema

The Chauvel is in a marvelous old building: Paddington's historic Town Hall. It's grand and vaulted. Walking into the cinema with its big stage and red velvet curtains gives quite an impression. The foyer, and in particular the balcony overlooking Paddington's Reservoir Park, is an elegant place to sip a glass while waiting for your date. Some years ago Sydney's Lord Mayor Clover Moore saved the cinema from going under. Still, it's not exactly a commercial hub. The Chauvel shows many films that don't attract a big audience. BodyMindLife Yoga Surry Hills review by BMZ

Where you can find balance right outside Central Station

Yoga is a lot about balance and this studio gets it right. They are a short walk from Central and the studio space is large but seems intimate. It's a heated studio but not stifling. They offer many different types of classes and levels: vinyasa yoga, meditation, yoga teacher training, workshops and retreats. I'm especially a fan of classes by Nicole and Andrew. The owners Philip and Nicole also have a growing community of top international teachers they invite to their studio in Sydney. Keep reading »

Ariel Bookstore Paddington review by BMZ

Limited selection but lovingly so

Ariel is not trying to be Barnes & Noble which is a good thing. It is not a book warehouse. It's a shop with a slant. Ariel's selection is deep in some areas and nonexistent in others. I go there for the art, architecture, and design books. The people I've met behind the counter seem to be avid readers and have a title or 2 to suggest. They feature quite a few local writers and often host book talks. Keep reading »

Thomas Dux Grocer: Paddington review by BMZ

I'll admit it, I like the Dux

When one of the weekly chores becomes an outing, you know that there is some good customer service happening. Thomas Dux is one of those places where you get hungry just strolling the aisles. You can suddenly and irrationally become an audacious menu planner, inspired by the ideas and lured by the fancy condiments. The prices are highly variable with some basics not any more expensive than other alternatives while other products seem to carry a heavy lux-dux tax. Given the friendly counter service, the beautiful fresh produce, and the manageable size, I'm a fan of T. Dux. Keep reading »

Babies Galore review by BMZ

1
Not "galorious"

Now really, Babies Galore, do you really think that a 8 week wait time without notification is appropriate for a young mother who has come into the store in person to order a sun shade for her pram? I mean 2 months in the life of a child means leaps of growth, huge numbers of pram trips, and possibly going from blob to full fledge toddler. I just cannot understand why a new baby store does not open in Sydney to provide good service to the legions of new mums and bubs flooding the streets. Opportunity people!

Lettuce Delivers Organics review by BMZ

Delicious fruit & veg, without the poison

My weekly delivery of fresh fruit and veg from Lettuce Deliver makes me smile. The company manages to pack a box full of seasonal produce from local farmers every week and bring it to my door for $40. The box also comes with a weekly letter with updates on farmers, weather, and folksy tips about how to get the most flavour from the assortment. They also differentiate between the various types of organic certifications – a minefield to be sure – though frankly I order the produce not for its certification but because it does taste better than the stuff on offer at Coles or Woolies. Vampt Vintage Design review by BMZ

Great Danish design in Surry Hills

Those great Danes really do know how to design a sofa. Vampt is this eclectic Surry Hills furniture shop that has a specialty in Scandinavian, especially Danish design.  Their containers from Copenhagen makes furniture shopping fun again. Eleni, who rules the roost at the hip Surry Hills showroom, knows her Eames from her Wegners. She truly seems to like helping you out. If you come in with an odd request, she'll relish it like a challenge. She doesn't want bad owners for these pieces so you get to try it in situ and if it doesn't suit you can try another. Vodafone review by BMZ

In the world of confusing iPhone plans, vodafone isn't bad

If you are lucky and it's not busy, the people in the shop take the time to help you find apps, teach you about wi-fi and other tips for downloading, and are nice. They have a good iPhone plan that includes a free phone.  BUT if you go with the iPhone plan, you may want to opt for insurance because if it gets lost of stolen you are buying a brand new full-priced handset with no discounts.

Woolworths review by BMZ

Refreshingly produce oriented

The Fresh Food people...what a delight. Woolworths has upped their game and they have left Coles in the lurch. With all the info out there about eating fresh and avoiding processed food, Woolworths is taking the right path. Thanks for going fresh Woolies.

Westpac review by BMZ

No complaints

I like my bank. Call me crazy, but Westpac works for me. I like that Gail Kelly is at the forefront. I believe she stands for folks like me. They have good rates, good mortgage packages, and you can often get them on the phone. It's not bad. Props to Westpac.

Commonwealth Bank review by BMZ

2
Clunky

How is it that in 2009 the leading internet broker in Australia still looks like it was programmed in 1999? Commonwealth Bank needs to invest in an upgrade for Comsec. The site is exceedingly clunky and incapable of tracking basic cost base info. It cannot produce tax reports and has no portfolio analysis capability. CBA get with the program!

Qantas Airlines review by BMZ

Hard to escape the flying kangaroo

You cannot avoid the Flying Kangaroo when taking to the air to reach some parts of Australia. And, that’s not all bad. Qantas tries to improve its service to passengers through upgraded entertainment systems, Marc Newsom designs, and cuisine that features good Aussie food and wines. However, they still operate like an old style airline and charge a premium. I’ve enjoyed their trans-Pacific service, but confess that I look forward to sampling in-flight services on new competitors on these routes. And I wouldn't mind if they offered some better fare deals...

American Airlines review by BMZ

Big price; small screens

It's impossible to give a fair review of an airline.  AA gets it right some of the time, and some of the routes, with wonderful individuals working hard to deliver you to your destination safely.  After all, a safe arrival should be a five-star experience every time.  But there are other airlines that do it other ways.  How's it possible in today's world, that one pays $15k for a long haul ticket... and the personal TV monitor in is still smaller than than a blackberry? At the very least, get bigger screens AA.
