Pieno review by Died On Hold

Perfect cafe for a Sunday afternoon

Pieno has three excellent features. Firstly, it has a lovely outdoor area that catches the afternoon sun (or shade, if you prefer). Secondly, it serves food, including breakfast, all day, which solves that awkard Sydney problem of finding decent food between 3-5pm. Lastly the food itself is very tasty. I had the big breakfast, which was good, and Mrs DOH had the breakfast bruschetta with eggs, cheese and prosciutto, which was even better. Pieno was perfect for a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Kingsleys Steak & Crabhouse review by Died On Hold

Friday lunch doesn't get much better

Kingsley's, and Woolloomooloo Wharf generally, is by now a Sydney institution. Save for Icebergs, perhaps, there is no better place for lunch in Sydney. The location is gorgeous, the afternoon winter sun even more so. And, happily, the steak meets the required standard. (My 200g grass-fed ribeye was delicious.)  Although I still have Moo Moo's in Brisbane slightly ahead on the steak-o-meter, and although Kingsley's is fully priced, the whole package remains superb for a special occasion. Like any Friday. Keep reading »

Wowcow: Darlinghurst review by Died On Hold

Tasty fro-yo, friendly service

Frozen yoghurt isn't usually my thing. However Mrs DOH was keen to try this place (after dinner at nearby Omerta) and I must say I was impressed. The passionfruit yoghurt was tasty and the service was professional and friendly. The Manager made a particular effort to say hello and goodbye and Wowcow earns an extra star for that.

Omerta review by Died On Hold

I have to break the code of silence on this one

Omerta is another one of the wine bar/restuaruants that has sprung up in Sydney with the change in the licensing laws. It's a welcome addition. Mrs DOH and I lobbed in on a Saturday night, reservation-less, and found our whole experience very positive. Friendly and knowledgeable service from both the maitre d' and our waiter, delicious Italian food (I had pork shoulder and we shared a crusty soup) and a buzzy vibe in very pleasant surroudings. It wasn't cheap but it did deliver a most enjoyable night.

Via Abercrombie review by Died On Hold

Good, not great

If there's a "control sample" for sandwich shops, it's the chicken schnitzel sandwich. Ranging from the superb (Collier's) to the re-heated and tasteless (most sandwich takeaways), it an accurate gauge of a luncheria's quality. Mine at Via Abercrombie was just on the driver's side of middle-of-the-road. Sure it was generous, and reasonably tasty, but certainly not worth unduly queuing for. Many rave about Via Abercrombie, but I am not one of them.

Zinc review by Died On Hold

Buzzy Points Point fave in a bacon sandwich form slump

Zinc used to be my number 1 weekend breakfast spot. The big tables, ample supply of newspapers, good coffee and delicioius bacon sandwich kept myself and Mrs DOH coming back week after week. Kids now make our visits rarer, but I squeezed one in today. The coffee is still good, and the big table saw me through 31 pages of sports section, but I'm sad to say the bacon sandwich has lost its zing. I don't know if they changed the recipe, but it's not the same as in its beetroot and mayo-infused glory days (c. 2003-08). Keep reading »

No Name Restaurant review by Died On Hold

The original cheap eats classic

What is there to say about this restaurant that hasn't been said before? I've been a regular here since university days in the early 90s, and happily the only thing that's changed is the price of the spag bol. (It's gone from $5 to $10 - the sheer inflation of it all!) You still get a full meal for $10 or less, and in and out in minutes. The service is functional and the surroundings extremely basic, but it is the least pretentious restaurant in the world and reassuringly the same every time. Keep reading »

Cumulus, Inc. review by Died On Hold

Delicious Mod Oz food and buzzy vibe in Melbourne CBD

Lobbed into Cumulus last night without knowing anything about it (turns out it's new, hip and the chef is quite well-known). I was quite impressed. Casual, buzzy vibe with outstanding food and quick, knowledgeable, friendly service (e.g. good recommendations for both wine and food). I had the lamb shoulder as a main course and it was delish. It's not in the cheap-and-cheerful category, but it's very good.

Terry Gilsenan, Personal Trainer review by Died On Hold

I love Terry!

Agree with previous reviewers here. Terry makes training extremely enjoyable, despite the early mornings, the wet Domain grass and the fact that it's, well, training. More of a one-man chat show than a boot camp, Terry's group classes are a perfect way to get fit and have fun along the way.

Toby's Estate: Woolloomooloo review by Died On Hold

I want to like it more than I do

The service here has improved significantly - it's more personal and more competent - and the coffee has always been good, if you like the chocolatey Toby's blend, but I still don't love the place. Probably two main reasons: the food, which is ok but not great (sandwiches too bready, breakfast eggs not up to snuff), and the small tables, which preclude newspaper reading (a cardinal sin in a cafe). However the weekend and late afternoon opening hours make it a convenient option when other places (e.g. Collier's) are closed.

Moo Moo Wine Bar + Grill Brisbane review by Died On Hold

Oustanding steak in the Brisbane CBD

Was in Brisbane last night with a colleague on business and looking for a good feed. The hotel concierge pointed us to Moo Moo, which only opened a couple of weeks ago (June 6, 2010), although it turns out it has been long-established on the Gold Coast. Anyway, it was excellent. In particular, the steak was DELICIOUS. I've been to many of the leading steak joints in Sydney and in my view the steak here was superior, and better value for money. My colleague, who is vegetarian, also claimed to enjoy himself! Highly recommended.

R & R Hair Care For Men review by Died On Hold

4
A good haircut for under $20

I grew up in Stanmore, and, for better or worse, grew up with R & R hair. Originally it was the first 'R', Renato, who took care of things, but with his passing a couple of years ago, it's the second 'R', his son Roger, who runs the show. He's reliably delivered my No.3 round the back and sides and a trim on top for years, and still can't bring himself to charge more than $20. (I think it's around $16-18, actually, with plenty of soccer chat thrown in.) Great value, so much so that I still drive to Stanmore for haircuts.

Palace Academy Twin review by Died On Hold

Who knew a cinema could have good service?

Lobbed up to the Academy Twin on the weekend with Mrs Died On Hold for our first movie in months, only to find we'd mistimed our run and arrived 10 minutes after the movie (Animal Kingdom) had started. Not wishing to waste a night's babysitting, nor wanting to feel like we'd missed something crucial in the movie, we were unsure what to do. So we asked the guy at the candy bar:

Us - Has the movie started?

Him - Yes, 8 minutes ago.

Us - What happens in the first ten minutes? Keep reading »

Title review by Died On Hold

A hip yet retro CD shop

I took a stroll up Crown St on Sunday afternoon with no fixed destination in mind. Title ended up being it. It drew me in with a comfortingly old-school value proposition: a small but select range of CDs. For one who blew way too much money on music in the '90s (or was it the rest of it I wasted?), this was a real retro pleasure. Unfortunately CDs weren't arranged alphabetically, which made browsing somewhat random, but there was an interesting range of genres, from rock through funk, blues and rock to classical. I'm Starvin' review by Died On Hold

Thank God! A good sandwich joint in the Sydney CBD

If, like me, you think it's nearly impossible to get a good sandwich in the CBD, redemption is at hand. I'm Starvin' does a range of excellent and filling sandwiches which you don't have to design yourself. My favourite is the roast beef one with caramelised onion, but there's something for carnivores and vegevores alike. Servings are generous and service is swift. What's not to like?

Baubridge & Kay review by Died On Hold

The George Clooney of shirt shops

I am not the type to mist up over fashion. After all, my idea of a big friday night is a six-pack and Friday Night Football. I am also not one who thinks business shirts must cost $180 each to be any good. However I still LOVE Baubridge & Kay. Beautiful fabrics, immaculately cut make the best business shirts going around. You know, the ones you pull out for the big presentation or the meeting with the CEO. The "A" Shirts, which make up an all-too-small proportion of your wardrobe. The ones that make you feel like George Clooney when you put them on. That's Baubridge & Kay. Keep reading »

Woolloomooloo Wash House review by Died On Hold

Get your ironing done for $2 per shirt

I like this place for 3 reasons: (1) it saves me ironing my shirts (2) I don't need a chit to pick up my clothes, because the bloke knows me, and (3) that same bloke - a Thai immigrant - works his guts out running this place to put food on the table for his family. (In fact his family does too, with various sons and daughters periodically running front of house.) At $2 a shirt, this is a business which makes life much easier at an everyday low price. Keep up the good work.

Strand Hotel review by Died On Hold

Unpretentious William St drinking hole

Mrs Died On Hold would not like the Strand Hotel. This is probably why I've never taken her there. She has a deep and abiding dislike of all businesses which operate in the mid-range. She loves a good low-rent operation, and of course can cope with the top-end. It's the middle she can't abide. (The fact that the middle is where most businesses operate is neither here nor there!) I, on the other hand, have quite a soft spot for this unpretentious William Street drinking hole. Mainly because it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Keep reading »

Woolworths: Potts Point review by Died On Hold

Not quite Hillary and Everest, but I go because it's there

To be fair to Woolies, having Woolies Potts Point is much better than not having it. The fact it's in a small, and oddly-shaped space is a function of the real estate available, not a broader corporate aspiration to build poky, L-shaped stores. They've also just spruced this place up, with a better layout and, seemingly,. better-looking produce. The one thing I can't quite come at is the self-service kiosks, which now outnumber human checkout personnel by about 5 to 1. Keep reading »

Oxford Shop: Chifley review by Died On Hold

4
Where I buy my suits

I've been a fan of Oxford (or the Oxford Shop, as it used to be) since the late 1990s. Whenever I need a wardrobe refresh (in my case, about every 5 years!) or a new suit, Oxford is where I go. In the past, usually the Paddington store, but my last pair of suits were sourced from Chifley. I must say the service wasn't up to the usual heights (efficiency + a view on what looks good and doesn't, crucial when buying a suit with a lifespan of 5 years+), but it was friendly. When the loyalty program is added in (with regular discounts), I'll stick with four stars.

Spudd's Gym review by Died On Hold

Train with a Rugby League legend

Rugby league followers over 30 will remember Mark "Spudd" Carroll as one of the largest, hardest-working front-rowers of the 1990s. Poached by Manly (natch) from Souths, Spudd won a premiership in 1996 and represented NSW in 7 State of Origins and Australia in 12 Tests. After a post-football stint as Russell Crowe's bodyguard, Spudd opened his own gym in Woolloomooloo. Very much in the Rocky-style, rather than the Fitness First style, which I approve of, the best thing about Spudds is that you are trained by the man himself. He is still a huge unit, and bloody fit. He's also a lot of fun. Keep reading »

East Sydney Hotel review by Died On Hold

A local with ambience to burn

Eastern Sydney pubs come in many forms. There are the flash upscale oneslike the White Horse. There are the all-purpose sprawlers like The Dolphin or The Golden Sheaf. There are the quasi-dive bars like the Strand. And there are the genuine "locals" like the Lord Dudley and this one, The East Sydney Hotel. Decidedly mid-20th century in feel, with an eclectic clientele, this is the perfect spot for an after-work, or after-hours, drink. The service is nothing special, but the ambience makes up for it. Dr. Brian Foo review by Died On Hold

4
A reliable GP in Woolloomooloo

Doctors are a funny bunch, service-wise. Some operate on the avuncular-family-doctor model, oozing reassurance. Others operate on the you-only-break-one-leg model and seem only interested in (a) the medical problem and (b) the bill. Dr Brian Foo hits the business-like, competent sweet spot in the middle. He is polite without being matey, and he is sympathetic, without missing a chance to give you the medical message. Representative example:

Dr Foo - "Your cholesterol is a bit high".

Me - "How do I stop that?

Dr Foo - "Eat less fat." Keep reading »

Rushcutters Bay Kiosk review by Died On Hold

Don't rush to Rushcutters

The coffee was decent and the food was edible, if limited in range, however the following exchange caused me to give RBK a one star rating:

Me - "I'd like [a few other things] and a serving of peanut butter toast."

Them - "The condiments are down there [points]."

Me - "You don't put the peanut butter on the toast?"

Them - "No."

Me - "So you just toast the bread?"

Them - "Yes"

Me - "Why don't I just cook it myself?"

Them - "Why don't you? Maybe because you don't have a grill?" Keep reading »

La Brasserie review by Died On Hold

C'est l'amour!

Do you remember when Sydney restaurants delivered great food AND value for money? I'm thinking of a time just before the 2000 Olympics, when we were an undiscovered food haven, and chefs felt the need to prove they were world-class without charging world-class prices. Now, it seems, things have reversed: we lead the world in $50 main courses that taste the same as every other $50 main course in town, but not quite as good as your Mum's spaghetti bolognaise. Anyway La Brasserie is a throwback to that wonderful time when eating out was both a wonderful experience, and reasonably priced. Keep reading »

Pocket review by Died On Hold

Pocket rocks it

Periodically there is a burst of incoherent noise from the South claiming Melbourne is a superior city to Sydney. The list of alleged reasons typically includes unconvincing vagueries such as "European feel", "Sports capital [unless you like rugby or league]" and "the seasons [i.e. t's cold and dark half the year]". The one reason that has always resonated, though, is the small, cool bars that characterise the Mexican capital. Until now. Cos we've got Pocket. Pocket rocks it for at least 3 reasons: Keep reading »

Ten Buck Alley review by Died On Hold

4
Ten Buck Alley still satisfies...

Every self-respecting Sydneysider needs a go-to spot for Saturday breakfast. This is currently mine. Low-key vibe, tasty food (well, the poached egg, linseed toast and upscale baked beans are good every time I have them, which is every time) and coffee that will actually wake you up. Overall, this is a step up from the services previously provided in this alley; I just wish they didn't put those hotel-style rods in the newspapers, and I do wish they were open Sundays.

NRMA review by Died On Hold

If you drive a bomb, it's a must!

Agree with other posters on this matter - NRMA provides an excellent roadside service and has justified, and repaid my membership since I got my first car (and first in a series of bombs) in 1992. (I have no views on insurance etc, although I guess that's a different company these days) However, punters should be aware - YOU NEED TO SIGN UP IN ADVANCE! A mate on my cricket team broke down on the M7 (Sydney) a few weeks ago and discovered, on calling NRMA, that he wasn't in fact a member. Keep reading »

Seasalt Cafe review by Died On Hold

A relaxed waterside diner

It's not easy to find a decent seaside cafe (or, for that matter, bar) in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. Bronte is a hassle to park, as is Bondi, and the kindly local council only allows you to stay for an hour in many spots. So it's a relief to be able to park the car quickly, walk a short distance and plonk down somewhere where there are superb views of the water, frolicking beachgoers and houses one will never be able to afford. The food is decent (the slightly premium prices are justified by the spot) and the service, while not the Ritz-Carlton, doesn't offend. Keep reading »

Collier's Sandwich Company review by Died On Hold

5
The best sandwich shop in Sydney

This has been the best sandwich shop in Sydney since inception in late 2006 (I think). Founders Cliff and Paulina were the ultimate tag team: Cliff devised the delicious sandwiches, while Paulina provided the velvet service and operational steel. The Colliers sold out to new owners in 2008 and, while the sandwiches have remained superb, the service has become a bit erratic. Still the best place to lunch around, and the sandwiches get five stars.

Telstra review by Died On Hold

2
High prices but decent coverage

There was a time I vowed never to be a Telstra customer. Having broken this vow, I'm not sure I was wrong to make it. The prices are high, the single bill comes as three bills, and they don't let you pay by credit card. And of course the mobile "plans" are incomprehensible. However the coverage on the "everywhere, man" mobile internet is pretty good. Bottom line: you'll get a better deal elsewhere, but they offend me less than they used to.

Qantas Airlines review by Died On Hold

A real mixed bag

They’re a real mixed bag – good at everything, some of the time, but periodically compromised by lateness, and annoyingly inaccessible frequent flyer bookings. At the moment I like them - they don't seem to be running as late as usual - that may well change.
