Yulli's review by Mel K

Drinks + vegetarian food that even a carnivore can love

As anyone in my family can tell you, I am a not a big fan of vegetables ("veggies in disguise" is the refrain for family meals).  But even I loved the all-vegetarian food at Yulli's. Besides the good food, there are drinks, and a fun vibe:  in the evening, it's hopping with hipsters; in the day, it's a mellow read-the-paper-while-you-lunch spot.  A good place to go for a break when wandering Surry Hills.

Lotus Pod review by Mel K

4
Good value, interesting clothes

Before going inside Lotus Pod, I assumed it would be another one of the overpriced women's boutiques all over Sydney ($150 for a t-shirt? Not me!). To my surprise, the clothes & accessories were very reasonably priced! The selection is a fun cross-section of smaller brands; styles are generally trendy, and trend young, but there's plenty of selection for those over 25 (or 30 or...) too. I got a great little dress for $79 that has seen me through dress-up and dress-down occasions. Sales staff were friendly and efficient. I'll be back.

Arch Cafe review by Mel K

Solid, reliable, always open

The value proposition of The Arch is that it is low maintenance:  it's almost always open, prices are pretty low, food and coffee are decent, and the service is always friendly and efficient.  And you can come here for any length of time, for any pre- or post- event and you won't be looked at askance.  They've got gelato too - good for after dinner at one of the other Stanley Street restaurants.  There's also a great old-school vibe here with old Italian guys sipping espresso and various weathered neighbourhood types gossiping away.

Omerta review by Mel K

4
Excellent food & service and an interesting menu

I thoroughly enjoyed Omerta: the food was fantastic, with service to match. We didn't have a reservation yet the host was welcoming and fit us in, and all staff handled the time constraint (the table was needed an hour or so later) smoothly and in a way that didn't rush us at all. (So unlike many Sydney trendy restaurants where they act as if they are doing you a favour to take your money!) The atmosphere is also very appealing - current but still warm & intimate. Good place for a date.

Wowcow: Darlinghurst review by Mel K

4
YUM!

Being American, I've been looking for a good place in Sydney for fro-yo (i.e., frozen yoghurt to you Ausssies), and here it is! Open late, and in the heart of the restaurant & bar area in Darlo, Wowcow is perfect for a little sweet top-up after dinner, or before going out. I had the passionfruit and it had an incredibly fresh, crisp, REAL taste. Plus the staff and manager were super-friendly. I'll be back.

Sideways Deli Cafe review by Mel K

4
Great cafe, and kids welcome

This spot, in the middle of a residential area of Dulwich Hill, is a great local cafe with a buzzy vibe and delicious eggs (especially the pesto scrambled eggs and the veg & feta omelette) and muffins (both savoury and sweet).  Another bonus if you've got kids is that there are plenty of high chairs available, and lots of other parents & kids about so you don't need to worry about your toddler/baby spoiling the serenity of others' brekkies.

Randwick Ritz Cinema review by Mel K

4
In the value sweet spot

The Randwick Ritz manages to provide movies, good service, and decent facilities at the prices that I think movies should be.  Plus, it's right at the heart of The Spot, with lots of restaurants & bars around for pre- or post-movie nibbles & bevvies.

White Rabbit Gallery review by Mel K

5
Follow this rabbit!

This gallery is AMAZING.  The art is fabulous - engaging, interesting, and yet accessible - and the gallery itself is very well laid-out, with each floor a bite-size piece.  And because it is a private collection, there is a consistent sensibility and story to it.  The extra bonus is that you can relax afterwards in the tea cafe and have a cup of lovely tea and small nibbles.  (No meal-size fare, but enough to hold you over till your next meal.)  I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

The Winery by Gazebo review by Mel K

4
Fabulous spot for a leisurely lunch, especially with cocktails

The Winery by Gazebo, like it's sister spot in Elizabeth Bay, is an excellent place to come for cocktails - especially in the afternoon, as the place gets glorious light.  The pear crumble cocktail in particular is dangerously good.  The food and service are good, though not necessarily distinctive.  Great for a group.

Organic Produce Cafe review by Mel K

4
Good food - and you can feel virtuous too

I've been here a few times now & will be back:  the food has been very good, the coffee also good, and the staff very friendly.  Only downsides are (a) it's a bit squeezed/crowded indoors (OK if you only have two people); (b) prices are a little bit higher because ingredients are organic.

Hotel Formule 1 Perth Airport review by Mel K

1
Only barely tolerable

I love the concept of an inexpensive, clean, functional, but no-frills hotel.  Unfortunately, I found Formule 1 (Perth Airport) to be only barely tolerable as it reeked of bad disinfectant and cigarettes.  The lack of lifts (I was on the 3rd floor) and the bad lighting & dubious-motel paint colour compounded it (things I could have forgiven otherwise).  What's more, the price was OK but wasn't ridiculously cheap.  I found the whole experience unpleasant, and won't be back.

Mushu review by Mel K

4
A great boutique for accessories & gifts

I went to Mushu on the recommendation of Customer Underground mavens, and was not disappointed.  They have a great selection of bags in all shapes & sizes & styles as well as jewelry and clothes - and most are at decent prices too.  Fun and funky, but still classy.

Bill's: Darlinghurst review by Mel K

4
The Sydney classic still delivers

I went to Bill's the other day with an friend from overseas and found the renowned Bill's breakfast to be as good as ever.  So many delicious options, from the corn fritters to the scrambled eggs to the ricotta hotcakes with divine honeycomb butter.  The only problem with Bill's, really, is that it's too popular - so on weekends, it's a bit of a hassle (especially with kids).  But weekdays, especially if you can swing a naughty late breakfast, are fabulous.

Moo review by Mel K

5
Excellent, inexpensive printing - with personality

I just received my order of business mini-cards from Moo and I am impressed with this business, start-to-finish.  Their site is easy to use, the ordering process simple, and everything arrived promptly and looks great.  (The only flaw was my own fault as I'd made a bad text colour choice for the back.)  Before ordering with them, I priced out similar printing here in Sydney and found it would be TWICE as much.  I've also ordered from an online competitor previously, whom I'd found to be clunky and not user-friendly. Taste Baguette: Met Centre review by Mel K

5
Sooo delicious

I am so excited to have discovered a great place for Vietnamese baguettes in Sydney!  If you have never had one:  they are a fresh baguette filled with some kind of protein + Vietnamese salad of carrots etc. + dressing.  And Taste does a superb version:  the bread is perfectly fresh - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside; the fillings are fresh and the salad crisp; AND it's very well-priced.  I can't wait to go back.

Brad Ngata Hair Direction review by Mel K

4
Good salon - and I love Remington!

Remington has been doing my hair for years now - and I follow him to whatever salon he goes to.  His current home is Brad Ngata, and this is my favourite of his salons so far - the staff are welcoming and efficient; the atmosphere calm; the decor pleasant.  I highly recommend Remington - and like the salon too.

Spring Hill Beef Hampers review by Mel K

5
Taste the difference of grass-fed beef

Based on Marzipan's suggestion, I gave Spring Hill Beef Hampers a try to source meat for a Friday BBQ - and what a success, on all fronts! The beef was delivered with no hassle (they called the day before to tell me what time it would arrive) and the meat was absolutely delicious.  I'm now a convert to grass-fed beef and will be ordering from Spring Hill again.  The only downside is that you do need to order quite a bit if you want to avoid a delivery charge; however, it's all vacuum-sealed, so will last awhile in the fridge. The Tea Centre review by Mel K

5
Great, knowledgeable service

I dropped into The Tea Centre to find a teapot and was so pleased at the service I received.  All the staff, including the owner, were friendly and knowledgeable; they knew all the pros & cons of all the products in-stock, and also were instantly able to suggest a tea for me based on my preferences.  They also have a little cafe that serves tea (of course) and little food treats.  I'm very happy with my teapot, and will be back again soon to restock on tea.

Time to Vino wine bar review by Mel K

3
Nice little wine bar

Time to Vino is an intimate restaurant with an upstairs bar.  The wine list is extensive, and I loved that there were lots of wine available in smaller sizes (by glass or half-bottle).  My overall experience here was good, without being stand-out; now that going out with hubby requires a babysitter, I'm not sure I'd be back to the restaurant though I think I would come back for the bar.  Not for any negative reason, but rather because the place didn't inspire passion in me. Maloneys Grocer: Surry Hills review by Mel K

4
Well-edited, convenient grocer

Maloneys has a good selection of things to make a great meal - excellent fruit & veg, a deli, fresh pastas, cheeses, etc.  And it's very well-located at the heart of Crown Street Surry Hills.  This is not the place to stock up on your dry goods or household items; rather, it's the place to stop by after work or while shopping on a Saturday, so you have something fresh for dinner.  Service has been friendly and welcoming every time I've been here.

Black Star Pastry review by Mel K

4
Fabulous tarts

The tarts at Black Star are truly delicious and while pricey, they are worth it. They're attractive too and a great option for a dinner party dessert.  The shop itself was packed when I went there on a Sunday afternoon, and I found the service to be fine, but lacking warmth.  I'd be back though - not for a cafe experience, but to pick up some divine dessert...

Sexy Nails: Surry Hills review by Mel K

2
I'll go elsewhere for my next pedi

The Sexy Nails shop in Surry Hills looks attractive - well-lit, freshly painted, and the chairs are clean & white - but closer inspection reveals things aren't quite as pristine as they appear:  the waxing dispensers were messy, the trays looked like they hadn't been wiped down.  This was consistent with my experience of a pedi & waxing.   The results were adequate, but the experience wasn't all I'd hoped for - I found the service a bit brusque and the technician a bit rough, and rushed (even though no customers were waiting). The Prince Consort's Shoe Shine Service review by Mel K

5
A great shoeshine & outstanding service

Peter and his crew at The Prince Consort's Shoe Shine do a fabulous job of making leather shoes look new, as well as being invariably friendly and helpful.  This is the only shoe shine place I'm aware of in Sydney where you can get the shoes you are wearing shined (that is, now that his shop in the QVB has closed - boo!).  Whenever you're in the CBD, stop by Peter's for a shine!

Pat & Sticks Ice Cream review by Mel K

5
Incredible ice cream sandwiches!

Pat & Stick's ice cream sandwiches are my current food obsession (along with Din Tai Fung dumplings and Kakawa hot chocolate); they are sooo delicious.  Seek them out & give them a try - I know they're sold at Thomas Dux and at the cafe at the Boy Charlton pool at at the Icebergs pool.  They're a little pricey ($5), but think of them as dessert & you'll find them well worth it!

Ten Buck Alley review by Mel K

4
Friendly service, great breakfast

The breakfast here is excellent - particularly the herb & feta omelette - and the coffee is good.  The service is always welcoming and just the right degree of attentive.  I've been for lunch too, which is also good.  I feel bummed for them that the cycleway construction has put a fence around them for months, making it look as if the place is closed (it's not).  Hopefully that will be done soon and they'll get more exposure.

Crumpler: George Street review by Mel K

5
Cool bags, great service

I went into Crumpler on Monday in search of a laptop bag, fully expecting that the pricetag would be high - I know the bags have a reputation for being well-constructed, and they're cool-looking, and that usually comes at a price.  To my surprise, this was not the case.  But what's better was the service:  Brendan, who works there, was a great help to me in choosing the right bag, and patient as I tried my laptop in different styles and fretted over which to go with.  I finally made a decision, and I'm now thrilled with it!  I recommend Crumpler.

Din Tai Fung review by Mel K

5
I am obsessed with the soup dumplings

The soup dumplings here are to-die-for and are a food fixation of mine.  Other big pluses:  quick service, efficient & fair seating system (though queues are long at peak times), super-clean (you can watch the dumpling making!), and very friendly to children - they'll bring bubs a little bowl & cup & spoon and often coo & chat if it's not too busy.  Come here any chance you can!  A tip:  arrive late - e.g., 2pm-ish to get quick seating.

Customs House Library review by Mel K

5
Hidden gem in plain sight

I was amazed to discover this lovely library right in the middle of the city, in the primest of prime locations.  A good selection of books to borrow, a huge selection of international newspapers to browse, and lovely reading/working rooms -  all free!  Plus, it's always a treat just to walk into Customs House and check out the model of Sydney on the ground floor.

Stanley Street Station review by Mel K

2
Disappointed, but willing to give it another try

My first experience at Stanley Street Station was underwhelming, despite its light-filled corner location and the friendly & competent table service I received.  The disappointment was the food, which seemed to me to reflect a lack of attention to detail:  the "roasted tomato" had been barely cooked on a grill; the toast wasn't really toasted; the sausage was cool and overcooked.  It's too bad, as I want to like this place - I like the idea of a spacious, casual eatery in the neighborhood.  Perhaps it was an off-day - it was Sunday, after all. Yellow Bistro & Food Store review by Mel K

4
Very good food and delicious desserts

The food at Yellow - lots of pastas and salads - is very good, but the desserts are true stand-outs.  Desserts are also conveniently sized & packaged so that they can be taken away if you're feeling like treating yourself, or pretending to your dinner party guests that you're an expert cake-maker. Be sure to get a truffle while you're there:  melt-in-your mouth chocolate with passionfruit...amazing.  BTW, this is a 'proper' lunch place - i.e., real food, not sandwiches (and prices to match) - although the atmosphere is more casual/cafe-like.

Indochine Cafe review by Mel K

5
Perfect place for a casual lunch meeting in the CBD

The food at Indochine is consistently excellent - in fact, I'm addicted to their spring rolls & vermicelli dish, so I try to plan lunch meetings to take place here.   The other advantages:  food comes out super-quickly, but is still totally fresh (e.g., crispy spring rolls), enough of a restaurant setting to have a proper lunch (doesn't feel like those bland CBD cafes), and reasonable prices.

Yuenne Alterations and Tailoring review by Mel K

5
Excellent work - and great service

I brought a formal dress to Yuenne to be altered - and one that was enough of an investment that I was nervous about it being touch - and she did a fantastic job.  Best of all, she was efficient, had the item ready when she said it would be (which was a shorter time than I'd thought it would be), and the price was very reasonable.  I've heard she also does a good job of tailoring, and in particular, can copy existing garments in different fabrics of your choice.  I'll definitely be back.

Australian Museum review by Mel K

4
Great museum to take the kids

The Australian Museum has lots of good exhibits that will entertain kids - from crocodiles to birds to dinosaurs and more.  The exhibits also have engaging interactive elements.  And on Thursdays at 10:30am and 11:15am, there is a story time & activity session for under-5s in their special child-proof Kidspace - a good activity to distract a toddler, especially on a rainy day...  Admission is free for under-5s, so you're only out your own ticket - not too bad.

La Mint review by Mel K

4
Delicious Vietnamese food in a proper restaurant setting

The food at La Mint is great!  It is Vietnamese, but with a bit of a French twist - e.g., crepes for dessert.  It's a calm, generally quiet restaurant with pleasant decor and good, friendly staff (many of whom are French).  I highly recommend the Shaking Beef and the Salt & Pepper Tofu.

Kinokuniya review by Mel K

5
Huge bookstore with a great crime (and other genre) selection

Kinokuniya is my favourite bookstore as it has a huge selection and, in particular, has a great crime section with most of the classic crime novelists that you can't find elsewhere.  There's also an excellent selection of children's books.  The whole store is very well laid-out, so it is easy to find things, and they have an easy to use computer if you are looking for more specialized non-fiction books.  They also have a range of Japanese stationery & gifts, a really big Japanese & other Asian languages section, and a cafe. Nail Salon KOKO review by Mel K

5
My favourite nail salon in Sydney

Tucked away upstairs next to Wynyard station is Koko Nails - and they are worth the effort to find.  Pedicures & manicures are reasonably priced, very skillfully done, and include a good massage.  What's more, the place is clean and tidy, and they use individual basins for your feet so there's none of the yuckiness of those pedicure chairs - and customers sit in a great La-Z-boy type chairs which is super-comfortable.  The Japanese staff are lovely too.  Note that they are only open weekdays. Fratelli Paradiso review by Mel K

4
One of my favourite restaurants

I love Fratelli Paradiso - for the warm, buzzy atmosphere; the delicious lasagne; the low hassle factor; and despite the less-than-warm service.  They are quirky:  they're closed on Saturday nights - what restaurant closes on Saturday nights?!,  the menu is only in Italian (and thus requires translation), the lasange is only sometimes on the menu even though it's almost always available, and the wallpaper changes often.  But I always enjoy it.  It's a great place to come with a few friends to chat and laugh over good food and wine. Micropest review by Mel K

5
Super-efficient, professional, and good value

The team at Micropest were a pleasure to deal with:  responded immediately to my phone call, made an appointment without delay, turned up on time, and did the job quickly.  What's more, their services were very reasonably priced and the treatment was effective - bye bye roaches!

Norton Street Grocer: Leichhardt review by Mel K

5
Beautiful fruit & veg

I'm always impressed with Norton Street Grocer:  the fruit & veg are always good quality, they've got a good selection of other meal-making items (cheese, paste, olives, deli meats), the place is easy to navigate, and service is friendly and efficient.  Whenever I'm near Leichhardt, I stop by to do my shopping here.  Another plus is that it's in a little shopping centre with two hours of free parking, and that also has a Coles, AC Butchery, a bakery, and a post office, so you can take care of multiple errands at once.

Terry Gilsenan, Personal Trainer review by Mel K

5
Terry makes working out fun

Terry is hilarious - and runs a great workout.  He's so entertaining, I would actually not think about the fact that I was working out (which I find impossible to do on my own).  Group sessions are reasonably priced and are typically in the Domain at 6:45am - perfect location & timing for a workout before work.  I highly recommend him.

Leona Edmiston: Vintage Boutique Sydney review by Mel K

5
Make the trip to Balmain to get frocks for less!

I'm addicted to Leona Edmiston dresses:  so flattering, perfect for so many occasions, and comfortable.  Yet the prices are often high, so I typically wait for sales...but now I've discovered the Vintage boutique.  New dresses are way way discounted as they are from previous seasons (but given the classic styles, who cares?); there are also some "pre-loved" dresses that are ridiculously cheap (I got one for $40, in perfect condition).  Lots of shoes and handbags and other accessories too.  Another plus:  it's down the end of Balmain where parking is easy...

Pocket review by Mel K

5
Addictive crepes & fries + good drinks

I've become totally addicted to the crepes at Pocket, and try to come here whenever I can - whether for afternoon coffee or an evening drink. Try the nutella & banana - yum...  The drinks are good, and reasonably priced.  Weekend evenings can get really busy, so just be aware you might have to wait to get in - but it's never that long, and the queue has a fair one-in one-out policy.

Bambini Trust Restaurant & Wine Room review by Mel K

5
Lovely, intimate spot in the CBD

Bambini Trust feels like an oasis in the CBD, with its warm, intimate atmosphere.  The food is nice, and the people-watching at breakfast in the restaurant is great fun.  But the wine bar is my favorite - a great place to come with one or two friends to have a chat over nibbles & wine, or for a date.

Safira Verde Cafe review by Mel K

3
Very good food, warm interior

This is a hidden-away little cafe in Woolloomooloo with excellent food - the owner/chef used to be the chef for the Norwegian embassy! The people who run it are lovely and the place itself is warm and comfy. A good local spot.

The Beauty Room: Darlinghurst review by Mel K

4
Lovely staff & nice environment

This is a lovely little salon that is perfect for waxing & facials.  It is pleasant and clean inside and staff are friendly and professional.  They do a good job with waxing; what I like most, though, is their professionalism with respect to booking appointments and being organized (which is strangely rare in salons).  Only downside is it is a bit pricey; though in the usual range for Sydney beauty salons of this sort.

Vivid Shop review by Mel K

4
The perfect shop for baby, and baby-mama, gifts

Vivid has gorgeous, thoughtfully selected & presented baby items (toys, clothes, decor) plus a cool array of women's clothes and accessories and some homewares.  The shop is light and feels spacious and the merchandise is friendly, colourful, and fun.  I've always found the staff friendly and helpful.  Come here for an easy way to get presents for babies, little kids, and the women in your life (or for yourself  - I always end up with something for myself!).

Una's: Darlinghurst review by Mel K

4
If you love schnitzel, you'll love Una's

Love Una's! Who wouldn't? (If you're a meat-eater that is.) The schnitzel is always yummy, and the place has a fun, casual vibe. The portions are huge, and the place is great value for money.

Il Baretto Restaurant review by Mel K

3
Like it, but don't really understand what all the fuss is about

The pasta is very good, but I can't rate Il Baretto more highly because of the hassle of no-bookings, which makes going there on a weekend evening virtually impossible.  I do, however, recommend them for a great lunch, where you can enjoy the food and a calm environment with lovely light.

Kakawa review by Mel K

5
Willy Wonka has nothing on Kakawa

Kakawa is an absolutely divine chocolate shop! Located in a somewhat unlikely spot, on William Street near Bourke (right around the corner from Miss Chu), Kakawa has fantastic chocolates, and ridiculously good hot chocolate. Also pleasing is that they have a wide selection at many price ranges - from the higher-end truffles (packed in lovely boxes) to plain bars of chocolates, chocolate-covered shortbread, meringues, and caramels. The two owners are wonderful too - so friendly and welcoming. I'm now back all the time, as I can't stay away from the hot chocolate..i

Arthur's Pizza: Randwick review by Mel K

3
Good, topping-heavy pizza - perfect pre-movies

Agree with higherthanexpectedcallvolumes that this pizza spot is a solid bet. The topping-heavy pizzas are a great pre-movie bet, as Arthur's is just around the corner; I've more than once found myself scoffing one last slice before running into the theater.

Pratten review by Mel K

5
Beautiful leather goods

Pratten always has a beautiful selection of wallets and small handbags in a huge range of leathers and fabrics, and occasionally other accessories as well. They used to have amazing shoes as well, but sadly their shoemaker is not around anymore... The items are tasteful & stylish, well-made, and generally good value as well. A great place to come for gifts.

The Health Hub review by Mel K

5
The perfect gym for mums

If you are a mum or soon-to-be mum and are looking for a place to exercise, this is the spot! This is a little, but perfectly sized gym with a little area for the kids so you can bring your child with you. Rachel, the owner, knows all about how to keep fit while pregnant, and recovering from birth; and, best of all, is fabulous with kids (she used to be a nanny) so can help keep your bub happy while you're working out. She does one-on-one and small group sessions, and is an excellent trainer. Keep reading »

Le Pain Quotidien: Surry Hills review by Mel K

4
Spacious, quiet cafe with delicious praline spread

I'm normally suspicious of international chains as food & environment typically lack personality, but I've become a convert to Le Pain Quotidien: the baked goods are consistently good, the praline spread is to-die-for, and the Surry Hills shop is pleasant and spacious. The Surry Hills location is great for business coffees (lots of space and fairly quiet) - or for parent coffees (room for strolllers + ramp access). Only qualification to my generally positive view is that I've found the service to be spotty: usually very friendly & efficient, but occasionally disorganized.

Bar Coluzzi review by Mel K

4
The perfect Vegemite toast

I wish I hadn't been up this Sunday morning at 6am, but at least Bar Coluzzi's perfect Vegemite Turkish toast & strong coffee was some compensation. The place is tiny, but they have plenty of chairs so you can perch on the sidewalk; the service is quick, the food is simple but tasty, the prices reasonable, the people-watching is great - and they're open every morning at 5am (I hope to never get there that early!).

Puntino Trattoria review by Mel K

4
Fantastic wood-fired pizza

Puntino makes fantastic wood-fired pizzas with thin crust and quality ingredients; they're absolutely more-ish, and I need to prevent myself from ordering from them too often! I highly recommend the Bada Bing (salami, olives, and more), the veggie pizza (hearty & tasty), and - surprisingly to me - the potato pizza, which has thinly sliced potato with just a little truffle oil (only if you want it). Pastas are also very good. It's a warm & friendly local spot; the perfect place for an informal dinner date or get-together with friends - or for takeaway. Keep reading »

Lily's Nails review by Mel K

Tiny, good value, no hassle nail bar

This is a tiny little nail bar, and offers good, inexpensive manis & pedis and excellent service. Most nail bars feel impersonal and factory-like, but not Lily's: she and her team are always friendly and welcoming.

Tropicana Caffe review by Mel K

3
Quick, but lacks personality

Agree with mrimat about the efficiency - it's a relief to go to a cafe where things happen quickly. However, I am not a fan of the food, and find the atmosphere a bit too cafeteria-like.

Aki's Indian Restaurant review by Mel K

4
Very good Indian food in a fabulous setting

The food at Aki's is very good, but the main reason to come here instead of other very good Indian restaurants is the setting: the wharf at Woolloomooloo. The bonus is prompt, friendly service (only flaw is the before-mentioned credit card policy). Food-wise, everything I've tried is excellent; I'm particularly addicted to the spinach chaat entree. A great way to enjoy beautiful outdoor seating at the wharf at a place that is friendly, unpretentious, has good food, and relatively reasonably priced.

Messina review by Mel K

Addictive gelato

Absolutely delicious gelato! Whenever I am even sort-of nearby, I make a trip here. The gelato is so flavourful and yet light-tasting; it is addictive... I love the chocolate chip. Open late, so perfect to stop by after dinner.

Forbes & Burton review by Mel K

4
Good brunch & not noisy - relaxing!

This is a great brunch spot, with yummy eggs and delicious baked beans. Particularly nice (and unusual for Sydney breakfast spots) is that the space manages to remain fairly quiet, with just the right (low) amount of background buzz even when crowded (the felt-lined ceiling does the trick). Beautiful light inside too. Busy on weekends.

Lotus Bar review by Mel K

5
The perfect bar for a date

This is a fabulous bar, the perfect place to come with a couple of friends or on a date. There is an extensive cocktail list (the Lotus martini is a destination drink) plus yummy nibbles available, and the service is exemplary, with knowledgeable barstaff that achieve the fine balance of friendly but not pushy. Best of all is the ambiance: intimate, comfortable, and stylish without being high maintenance.

Black Bull Butchery review by Mel K

5
A fabulous butcher

As soon as you walk in and see the sign saying "Black Bull Butchery and Meat Education Centre", you know you're in a different kind of butcher's shop - a genuine expert. And Black Bull delivers on the promise: great selection of mainstream meats (especially yummy are the marinated kebabs), accoutrements (sauces, spice rubs, etc.), a big selection of off-piste meats (crocodile, anyone?), as well as cooked ready-to-heat meals (yummy moussaka!). Extra bonus is that proprietor Glen Viller and staff are always friendly, efficient, and happy to provide advice and/or custom-cut meats. Keep reading »

Miss Chu review by Mel K

Yummy rice paper rolls & Vietnamese coffee

Miss Chu describes itself as "The Queen of rice paper rolls" and their rolls are indeed delicious, as is everything else that I have tried at this clean and welcoming takeaway stand (and catering HQ). Ingredients are obviously high-quality and the food is fresh. They're open for lunch and dinner, which is great, and apparently cater - which makes we want to have a party so that I could use them! Their "hawker stand" location is really designed for takeaway, or maybe a very quick bite with a friend on their little stools on the sidewalk - definitely not an eat-and-linger type place. Dinner Ladies review by Mel K

Homemade meals, without having to cook

The dinner ladies are THE BEST!! The food is delicious, tastes like homemade (well, a lot better than my homemade), and best of all, is entirely hassle-free. It is so liberating to have a few dinners a week that don't require planning, shopping, or cooking-from-scratch. The meals themselves are fantastic and there is lots of variety - my favorites are the lasagne and their various curries - especially the beef rendang. Keep reading »

Space for strollers + coffee = the place to go for mums' meetups

Yes, the food and coffee aren't the greatest - but where else can you go with more than one stroller and not feel anxious the whole time about taking up too much space/the roaming toddler/the baby crying, etc.? It's the perfect place to come if you've got little ones - and want to meet a friend who also has kids too. The playground right next door, and lots of open space, means that your kids can generally roam & be entertained while you have a much-needed coffee. Keep reading »

Fun, stylish baby items + excellent service - and online!

I've been so impressed with Baby's Got Style every time I've ordered - or received a gift - from them. They have a stylish & tasteful selection of baby clothes, toys, and gifts and the service is excellent: personal and so efficient. I love their returns process,. which saves the customer from having to go to the post office. The site has a great range of brands for clothes, and a well-edited set of toys, feeding items, and other accessories - plus some items for mum as well. Keep reading »

Babies Galore review by Mel K

Good selection but a patchy experience

Despite Babies Galore having a reliably wide selection of baby needs and toys, I try to avoid it as I have found the service inconsistent and the prices high. Plus, the different branding and 'feel' of the two stores I've been to (Randwick and Camperdown) I find strange. All-in-all, it means that while I'm generally sure I'll find the product I'm looking for, I'm never quite sure what kind of customer experience I'll have: smooth and helpful or terse or unavailable.

Woolloomooloo Pharmacy review by Mel K

Fantastic service

This pharmacy is small, but the service is excellent. Pharmacist Gloria and her team are friendly, knowledgeable, and discreet. The Woolloomooloo Pharmacy has the sort of genuine, neighborhood feel that is rare; and, because of this, I make it a point to use them as much as possible. Note: the non-pharmacy selection in the shop is fairly limited - they've got the basics, but this is not the sort of place to stock up on the latest cosmetics or hair care products.

Good takeaway pizza

This is a good spot for takeaway pizza: the 'za is very tasty, and the service is efficient.

Baby Things review by Mel K

4
Excellent service, with all the baby basics

The Baby Things store is small, but what they lack in size they make up for in personalized service and a well-edited selection of items. They have always had whatever I've come in for, as the areas in which their range seems to be smaller are the discretionary-type things: toys, furniture, decor. And it's so nice to be greeted straightaway and talk to someone knowledgeable about the products (such a difference from some of the other baby stores in Sydney). They also do car seat fitting with a minimum of hassle & waiting, which is great. Keep reading »

Go for the setting

Fantastic setting with decent food and adequate service. This is a great place for breakfast or lunch or coffee...even in cloudy weather, the location - overlooking Clovelly beach - is fabulous. And parking is better than most beachside cafe locations in Sydney. I've found the food better than I expected - it's not the reason to come here, but it's pretty good; the service I've found just OK - nothing stands out either positively or negatively.

Bourke Street Bakery review by Mel K

Delicious, but can be a hassle

Delicious baked goods - but agree that the original store on Bourke Street isn't suited for eating in. The flourless chocolate cake is fabulous.

Tiny Prints review by Mel K

THE place to get photo cards

Beautiful, stylish cards, invitations, & photo gifts + a great website + fast service + good prices = top marks all around! I ordered birth announcements from Tiny Prints and was so impressed with how well-designed and easy-to-use their website is and their selection of cards and stationery. The prices are very good as well - even including shipping to Australia (their shipping price seems to bear some relationship to the actual cost - rather than the profit-grab that many others' seems to be). And finally, the cards arrived quickly! I'll definitely be back. Keep reading »

Go to Bunnings instead

Convenient location for 2011 postcode...but that's about all the positives I see. The store is cramped and both times I've been there, I've found the staff unfriendly, albeit functionally helpful. I advise going to Bunnings instead.

East Sydney Hotel review by Mel K

"Yes, this is the pub with no pokies!"

A great pub with a mellow, comfy vibe...but I've found service a mixed bag. The place itself has an intimate, old-fashioned feel, and drinks are inexpensive. One could easily while away hours here, either in the cozy indoor area, or the outdoor seating (I certainly have). What's particularly great is that there are NO pokies here! (Sign quoted above.) I've found service to be adequate, though not stellar by any means. Nonetheless, it's one of my very favourite pubs in Sydney. Keep reading »

Zinc review by Mel K

Good brunch + big tables so you can read the paper

Efficient, if not warm & fuzzy, service; good food; and great tables. Although almost always crowded, the wait for table at breakfast/brunch is usually short, and once seated, it's a great breakfast experience as the food is yummy and the tables are big enough to eat & read the paper at the same time (even if dining with others). Service is good - orders are taken quickly and are accurate, food arrives promptly - but isn't necessarily warm. Keep reading »

JB Hi Fi review by Mel K

4
Great value and selection - but sometimes a hassle

Great selection and prices, generally helpful staff, crowded aisles. I think of JB as a 'no frills' sort of store: I go there because I'll generally find what I'm looking for, and trust it will be at a good price, but accept that the cost for that can be distracted and busy staff and long lines at the register.

La Brasserie review by Mel K

Delicious French bistro fare; excellent service.

This warm and welcoming French restaurant in East Sydney serves up well-executed traditional bistro fare; the steak tartare is particularly good, and their fries are fantastic. The service is great: friendly, helpful, and just the right level of attentiveness. A great place for a date, or dinner with friends.

EB Games review by Mel K

Very helpful staff

I found the Christmas gift I was looking for here at a good price and the staff member, David, who assisted me, was super-helpful: he clearly explained the product and options for purchase (different packages), got the item that wasn't in stock in that store to be brought in that day, and gave me helpful tips about setting it up. I'll definitely be back for any future gaming purchases.

While I've regularly found individual employees to be friendly and helpful, the overall level of service is not good. Keep reading »

Sweet Infinity Bakery review by Mel K

Outstanding cakes

Delicious pastries, high prices, variable service. Sweet Infinity has some fantastic baked goods - the flourless chocolate cake, financier cake, and chocolate croissants stand out.  I've found service variable:  excellent from the owner and some staff, and surly from another staff member.  They will do custom orders - and did an incredible chocolate & orange cake for me.  The bakery is small, so more of a place to drop in and pick up breakfast, lunch or snack, rather than linger (though there are a few seats). Acme Framing review by Mel K

I love Acme Framing!

Excellent custom framing with genuinely value-added service. Acme provides excellent custom framing to match almost anything you could dream up – and at surprisingly reasonable prices. Their work is very high quality and, most importantly, they spend the time to consult about design choices design - often evolving ideas through suggestions and consultation to come up with great, creative options. Cafe Sopra - Fratelli Fresh: Potts Point review by Mel K

Good food, but a hassle

The (Italian) food here is lovely and the menu broad and uniformly tempting, but the service leaves much to be desired: (1) they don't take reservations, so you take your chances with a long wait...and it is often crowded, so a wait is almost inevitable; (2) they don't offer to call you/notify you, so this generally means you are waiting in the very crowded 'bar' area - which is really the throughway for the groceries going to and from the storage room; (3) I have found staff several times to be either (or both) brusque, acting as if they are doing ME the favor, or somewhat clueless/delay Keep reading »

Woolworths review by Mel K

3
Good in-store, but online shop irritates me to the extreme

Good in-store experience, but online shopping isn't great value. Woolies' stores seem to operate well, with speedy check-out times and friendly staff. Their online shopping leaves something to be desired - particularly the search & browse, and the prices are often higher than in-store, in addition to requiring a delivery fee!

Coles - Home Delivery review by Mel K

4
Good online shopping

Excellent online shopping, even though the in-store experience can be variable. The online shopping site works very well, with a better interface and search ability than Woolworths', the prices are competitive, and I've always gotten my deliveries on-time and by someone friendly.

Best Cellars review by Mel K

5
Excellent selection + friendly & knowledgeable staff

This is a great wine/liquor store, particularly if you're shopping for a gift and would like a bit of assistance in selection. The only downside is that parking in the area is quite difficult, so it's best accessed on foot/via public transport - or just use their website or call them.

Commonwealth Bank review by Mel K

Good internet banking - and service seems to be improving

Good internet banking and many locations, but I have trouble believing this 'pillar' is on our (the customer's) team, despite their advertising. My experiences with them have been mixed: some people have been friendly & helpful, others haven't, sometimes waits are short, other times they're long. More fundamentally, their policies don't seem to be customer-oriented: for example, exception fees used to be ridiculously high (and only changed after the flurry of bad publicity), and the way payments are posted is opaque to me - and seems somehow to often generate bad results. Cullachange review by Mel K

I am a Cullachange evangelist!

Bringing new life to your clothes by dyeing! Cullachange has been a revelation for me, allowing resurrection of clothing items that have been stained - or chosen in a bad color - but are otherwise good. The dyeing is top quality, with a beautiful palette of both classic and seasonal colors. And the service could not be better: the staff are friendly and helpful, providing assistance in color choice; dyeing is prompt; you are told your order is ready by SMS; and, if you are unhappy with the result, Cullachange will re-dye for free. Collier's Sandwich Company review by Mel K

Destination sandwiches

THE best sandwiches. Once you've been here, all other sandwiches will pale in comparison... Worth the walk from the CBD; if you venture here from town, you'll see other refugees escaping those pale, over-priced food court sandwiches. Best sandwiches include: #4 (chicken schnitzel); #19 (egg salad & crispy pancetta); #24 (roast beef, caramelized onion, horseradish cream). The coffee and snack items are good too. Service is friendly & welcoming. Keep reading »

Telstra review by Mel K

Argh!! (Though the people are friendly)

Good coverage, high prices, lots of red tape. While the quality of Telstra's mobile coverage is excellent, and the people at their stores and call centres have been uniformly helpful and friendly to me, the company's delivery on their promises has lagged. For example: I signed up for five services in one go at the George Street Sydney store, with the promise of bundling discounts and a single bill. Yet it took some months before the discounts came through, and I still haven't managed to get the single bill. Keep reading »

Toby's Estate: Woolloomooloo review by Mel K

Delicious coffee, unpredictable timing

Toby’s makes great coffee and has several tasty food items; the interior is warm, and relatively comfortable, and the staff are always friendly. Yet I can’t give them the highest possible rating because of the cafe’s unpredictable service – specifically, the highly variable arrival (and sequencing) time of one’s order. All too often (at least fortnightly, and I go to the cafe at least 3-4x per week), food and/or coffee is significantly delayed. Keep reading »

Qantas Airlines review by Mel K

Great in-flight product, but...

I have mixed feelings about Qantas. On one hand: they deliver a top quality in-flight product, with nice cabins, generally good food, and generally good service. And, when I had premium flyer status, the phone and other service was very responsive, flexible, and friendly. On the other hand: some of their policies seem to be deliberately designed to be obstructive – for example, the difficulty in using vouchers (why must you book an e-ticket seven days in advance if you want to redeem a voucher?). GU Health review by Mel K

Prompt & helpful

GU Health has been a model of efficient, competent, and friendly customer service; indeed, all my interactions with them have been so easy that I've barely noticed them: I've gotten through immediately to a phone representative, the reps have been able to answer my questions/solve my problem, I've easily found the forms I need, and all claims have been paid quickly and with prompt dispatch of explanatory documentation. The only reason to not rate them five stars is that I've never had to test the limits of their service. Keep reading »

United Airlines review by Mel K

Take Qantas - unless the price is too low to resist

Although United is typically the less expensive airline for the Australia-US route, I can't particularly recommend them - that is, unless you find a truly amazing deal. That's because product- and service-wise they are well below Qantas: their planes are old and not that fresh; the economy class food is terrible; staff, while competent, typically aren't that warm/friendly/helpful; and their policies seem to fall into the common bucket of all airlines - namely, confusing and/or not about helping the customer. That said, I didn't find their service to be *bad*, just not-that-great.
