Trinder HD Pty Limited review by Moneypenny

A terrific family plumbing business

The Trinders are a family plumbing business, and true to the family nature of the business, their service is personal and terrific quality. For anyone who has had their hot water heater explode, their shower leak or their toilet do unmentionable things, these are the guys for you. Not only do they fix it, they are soothing while they do it, and they don't charge like crazed pirhanas.

A gym that's almost as good as a martini

As a person who would rather have a martini than exercise, it takes extra good service to get me into a gym at all, let alone on a regular basis. But Michael and the team make it all the pain and indignity of exercise worthwhile - encouraging without false perkiness and always interested in you and your progress. There is a good range of classes (Tim's spin class is a killer in a good way and try Caroline's pump class to get you feeling like a superhero), and the staff are terrific. Almost makes you like a gym.

Floral arrangements for your favourite person

These guys do excellent arrangements for delivery to your favourite person at their work. Their arrangements are practical and there is a good range of those in bowls and vases, and they're very helpful in assisting you to choose arrangements sight unseen in your price range and giving suggestions of what is in season that might be appropriate for your delivery.

Masters of the floral arts

Andy and Angie are masters of the floral arts, creating beautiful, elegant arrangements without a hint of twee or tacky. And their service is brilliant - personal and warm, they'll do anything for you. No bride would ever be a bridezilla with these guys at the floral wheel.

Quality, Secrecy, Patisserie!

A very well kept secret - and one that locals try not to share. Le Chocoreve is a longstanding inner west patisserie, and the quality of its French style tartes, croissants and baguettes is superlative. And the staff are always quick with a smile as they hand you your cafe au lait and eclair. Vive la France en Australie !

Norton Street Grocer: Leichhardt review by Moneypenny

The perfect Italian grocer

The original Norton St grocer has perfected the Italian grocer on a large scale. The range of fruit and vegetables is large and the quality excellent. The deli is great, and best of all, the team there are very happy to make recommendations - and each recommendation is accompanied by an invitation to taste the product. Well worth asking for recipe tips and suggestions about what's in season, or what might work in something you're planning to make. And it's a great place to practise your Italian.

An Italian meat insitution

Carlo and his store are an institution by now, which is why his empire has expanded. But the expansion is worthy - the team at AC are terrific, and really know their sausages. And their beef and their lamb and, really, everything that you'd want to roast in an oven or flame over a bbq. It's always worth asking for recipe tips and ideas as well, since they're never short of a recommendation or an idea.

A great city salon

This hair salon is a great city salon, doing good cuts and colours and not charging like wounded bulls - which for a city salon is something. As well as being open on weekends, they are open during the week after hours, which makes it easy to head there after work and blackberry while you have your hair done. How's that for efficiency?

I'm Starvin' review by Moneypenny

CBD sandwiches in the Roger Federer class

This has to be the CBD's best kept sandwich secret - big sandwiches, in the I'm Hungry and I'm Starvin' sizes, with fillings such as tandoori chicken and marinated lamb and a really good steak sandwich which is not for the faint hearted. And as the autographed endorsement from Roger Federer shows, they're definitely serious sandwiches.

Wholistic Medical Centre review by Moneypenny

Excellent treatments from a range of practitioners

This is an integrated general practice which has both GPs and alternative health practitioners, such as naturopath, osteopath and remedial massage. The treatments are excellent, and there is a full range of supplements by prescription available.

A practice that looks after you

A very good medical practice with a range of excellent doctors and health pratitioners over three sites - but it still feels like a small family practice. They look after you well and only suggest those tests and follow up visits that you really need.

Shoe repair with a smile

Have you ever had a high heel break while dashing across the road to a meeting? Ever worn through the soles of your favourite pair of brogues? If so, these guys are for you. They have repaired more of my shoes than I care to think about, and have done consistently good work. Right down to matching the colours to the shoe leather, and giving them back with a smile.

Beauty therapists of rare quality

Claudia and her team are some of the best beauty therapists around. They use Sothy's products, which are gentle on the skin, have an extensive range of treatment options (including great spray tans that don't make you look like a rotisserie chicken) and the salon facilities are relaxing and scrupulously clean. But it's the service that really makes a difference - attentive, knowledgeable and never, ever pushy. Keep reading »

A terrific dressmaker and tailor

Sally is a terrific dressmaker and tailor, with years of experience not only in bridal and other formal wear, but also in suits and shirts. She carries an enormous range of beautiful fabrics, has a good range of patterns in store to choose from, and can copy existing suits/dresses etc easily and well. Her service is very efficient - usually taking only three fittings from initial measurement to final fitting - and her work is good. And she won't be shy about telling you what won't look good on you, which is essential in a dressmaker/tailor.

Baby's Got Style review by Moneypenny

A godsend for time-poor shoppers who loathe tacky baby stuff

Baby's Got Style is aptly named - but it could probably also be named Baby Shower Inspiration Rescue or Convenient Baby Gifts for Last-Minute Dash to Hospital. They have an excellent range of high quality gifts and clothes for babies, with a sensibility that's a little bit quirky while still remaining stylish and practical. Their customer service is second to none - friendly, helpful and efficient. They are my first choice go-to store (and I don't have to leave my house !) for baby gifts and are a godsend for time-poor shoppers who nonetheless loathe tacky garish pastel baby stuff. A hide-away bar I keep coming back to

A wonderful hide-away bar, with barpersons who know a real cocktail when they see one – no umbrellas and pineapple here. There is a range of high quality spirits and wine, you can order bar snacks or have meals from the restaurant sent in and the lighting is of the flattering kind. Most of all, the service is prompt, knowledgeable, polite and welcoming. Who says the Youth of Today don’t have manners? I keep coming back and dragging new people to it for them to enjoy (they do)
