Bottega Del Vino review by Tim Hughes

At Bottega DV they have a great selection of Italian wines and know what they are talking about.

There is something about talking about good wine when planning a dinner party with someone who knows what they are talking about that fills you with an embarrassingly high sense of self worth. At Bottega DV they have a great selection of Italian wines and know what they are talking about. The surrounds match the mood (for spending and consuming). It is the ultimate in middle class wankery to talk Italian wine and meat combos in the the inner ctiy east - but it is also a hell of a lot of fun. If you also think so then this is the place

No one beats them on price.

I have given up on network or cable tv. I know the shows I want to watch and am patient to wait for the DVD set to come out. No one beats them on price. I used to shop around for the price of the set I was after but have now given up and just go to JB to get what I am looking for. Their only faux problem (and this is a problem for them not for me) is that I have gotten so used to their discounting and sales that I never buy any of their full priced sets - even if I really want it. Instead I wait for them to discount. Keep reading »

C'est si bon review by Tim Hughes

The French are the best pastry and cake makers on the planet. C'est si bon are the best at that art

The French are the best pastry and cake makers on the planet. C'est si bon are the best at that art in Sydney. I have a favorite cake. It is a combination of mango, white and milk chocolate mouse and I think some peach. I had been buying it for years (almost every birthday at least) without knowing the name of it. One day I asked the owner what the cake was called..."Nirvana" she answered with a shrug. The perfect name.

There are better airlines but few hit their promises better than Virgin Blue

Qantas has a better product than Virgin Blue (food on board, free tv, drinks) but Virgin delivers on their promises more justifying more stars. There are better airlines but few hit their promises better than Virgin Blue, by that I mean they delivery what they tell you they will. Planes are boarded and exited quickly, staff smile, fare rules are clear and enforced and on air experiences are consistently solid. Qantas have better seats and food but charge more and under deliver.

Brot review by Tim Hughes

Delicious. This is everything you want from a breadshop.

Oddly but delightfully located in deepest darkest Clovely (and near my house). This is everything you want from a breadshop. I don't mean that they make bread and open early. That is the easy stuff. I mean they make really really good bread and make great coffee too. They also make pastries - again a normal bread shop thing. Their pastry twist - that lifts them from 3 to 4 stars- is that they make them in bite size sizes rather than then ever expanding mega pastries that are now appearing. Keep reading »

Just William Chocolates review by Tim Hughes

If you get tired of the rocky road, get your hands on a mango flavoured penguin

I love rocky road chocolate. In fact love is not a strong enough word. If I could find the wordsmithery to do it I would type out the noise that Home Simpson makes on the Simpsons when he leans back, drools and exclaims his desire for beer, pork chops etc. The joy of marshmallow, chocolate, nuts and more all smashed together. No one smashes those ingredients together better than Just William. [run the tape again of me sitting back and drooling just thinking about it]. Keep reading »

Being able to drop off a bike on the way to work and still make the office by 830 is great.

I ride every day and need to by a new bike every 3-5 years. Just recently I went through the long and painful process of buying another ride. Long - because the curse of Australian bike shops is that (like car dealers I suppose) each store signs up with a particular manufacture - meaning you have to go a lot of stores to try different bikes. Painful - because (again like cars) bikes in Australia are so much more expensive than bikes in America. Keep reading »

Galaxy bookshop review by Tim Hughes

If you like sci-fi, horror (and fantasy) novels and are not ashamed to say it

It is not that often that I actually go to a bookshop. With the AUD so strong compared to the USD and the ease of online shopping, Amazon gets my dollar and attention more than offline equivalents. For Galaxy I make an exception, especially when I am challenging the sci-fi/horror seventeen year old that I once used to be. Galaxy is the best bookshop for the sci-fi/horror fiction lover. It is is not the range of choice that makes them the best (though they have a very comprehensive section). Rather it is that the staff are just as in to sci-fi and horror geekery as the customers. Qantas Airlines review by Tim Hughes

The airline has generally let me down in the gap between the promise of the product and the delivery

Australia's flagship airline is a top ten global airline. They cover the destinations that I want and the in air product is world class. They also treat me very well given my frequent flyer status. Their first class lounge at Sydney airport is the best part of any business trip that I do. All that should add up to a five star rating - but I am only going to give them a three. It is not enough to have the best coverage, great product and luxury add ons. Keep reading »
